This is a very silly question. When I visited London about 17 years ago, I noticed a Spastic Society collection box on nearly every corner. These were (IIRC) like large piggy banks in the shape of a small child on crutches. The money went into a slot on the kid’s head. I thought they were rather tacky, but didn’t take any particular note of them beyond that. Of course, at that time, I had no idea that I would someday have a little spastic of my own. I recently told my 14 year old daughter (who happens to have CP and walk with crutches) about these collection boxes. At first she didn’t believe me – even about the name of the Society. I was able to prove that the Spastic Society exists under that name by checking online, but now I wonder: Do they still use those same collection boxes. And, if they’ve retired them (as I certainly hope they have), could I find a used one for Dori’s Christmas present?
The Spastic Society is now called SCOPE. Its address is 12 Park Crescent in London. Do a search on Google and you should be able to find further information.
