For our new friend Timo

I recall several slightly off names being registered in a short span. There’s an ATMB thread about this somewhere; don’t know if there’s also a Pit thread, though.

I’m not sure I get this… is it that Parthenogenesis is similar to “parthenon”->Greek->Oedipus->Incest…?

And while we’re at it, can someone explain what God being sterile has to do with The Holy Trinity has to do with incest and/or masturbation? Something to do with Onanism? I know explaining jokes renders them unfunny but I would like to know.

(If you can’t tell, I’m not and wasn’t raised in the Christian mythos…)

Parthenogenesis is asexual reproduction without fertilization. So it’s like reproducing on your own without a partner, hence the masturbation/incest angle.

Someone correct me if I’m off here…

You’ve lost me already - what does asexual reproduction have to do with incest and masturbation?

ETA: Ohh, ok I think I’m starting to get the pun… Just glanced at the wiki page for parthenogensis: “The word parthenogenesis comes from the Greek παρθένος, parthenos, meaning “virgin” and γένεσις, genesis, meaning “birth”.[1]” I’m still not understanding what the virgin birth has to do with incest, masturbation and God shooting blanks, though…

Parthenos is the Greek word for virgin, as used in the gospel of Matthew. Genesis is the first book of the Bible. It may have been intended as a pun, but I doubt it.

The incest and masturbation ideas come from God being three-in-one (masturbation) as well as a Father and Son (incest).

Past the edit limit.

Maybe I should look at Wikipedia more often… Apparently it was The Holy Ghost (part of the Holy Trinity) which impregnated Mary, Jesus’ mum? I get the bit about God shooting blanks now, but not the incest nor masturbation connection.

OK, thanks, DrFidelius. I think I get it… is this Holy Trinity thing supposed to make sense, by the way? Just skimming, it seems like a mish-mash of half-realized ideas about God.

Granted, that is most religions.
