It’s sad that all of Madonna’s love songs are bittersweet, because I’d love to use one. But she doesn’t have any sappy, happy songs. The ones that are happy enough are too pop-y (like Cherish) for a solemn occasion, and all the other ones about love have sad endings. Notwithstanding, the third dance at our wedding is going to be the MTV VMA’s Like A Virgin/Hollywood.
Re: unfortunate choices for wedding songs, I saw a VH1 program the other day, where the topic of discussion was misconstrued song meanings. They interviewed Billy Idol, who expressed amusement that White Wedding is so often used as a wedding song. Evidently it had something to do with his sister marrying a guy that he (Billy) did not think she should marry, as he was abusive or controlling. Or something to that effect.
My husband and I did use “I Could Not Ask for More” by Sara Evans, but I wish we’d used “There Was You” from The Fantasticks. We started dating during that show, and it has other sentimental value. Also, the one we used felt rather long.
okay, so I broke the subject line’s rules. deal with it.
Morelin agreed with me that the Imperial March would be cool, so long as she doesn’t have to wear the Leia hair. So I said she could be Chewie instead. Then she hit me.
On the other hand, perhaps Deutschland über alles would be even more tasteless. Although I’m not so sure enough people would recognize it to create a shock value as entertaining.
I think proceeding down the aisle to the James Bond theme would be pretty damn cool. Of course, the tuxes would have to have vests instead of cummerbunds.
If somebody had forced me to have too many people walking down the aisle all at once, I would bribe whoever necessary to play Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall.”
Seriously, though? If not classical, I might do Sarah McLachlan’s “Better Than Ice Cream.”
You know what’d be even better? All the groomsmen come down the aisle to it and then the groom comes down the ceiling on a harness thing, like in Mission Impossible.
MixieArmadillo: I saw that VH-1 show where Billy Idol talked about “White Wedding.” I guess he hadn’t seen his sister in a while and was getting divorced right when she was getting married. Having become bitter due to his marriage failing (though it failed b/c he was cheating, duh), he wrote “White Wedding.” His sister is still married, though.
Sting has expressed shock and chagrin that people often use “Every Breath You Take” as a wedding song. He said that people must really missing the fact that the song is about an obsessive stalker.
dantheman, re “The Imperial March”: I only have the one brother, so I think we can rule out being related, and leave it as “great minds think alike.”
Blue Rodeo: Dark Angel or Dido: Closer were the first two that spring to mind, they have a lot of significance for me and my sweetie. Not that we’re anywhere near marriage though…
Gingy and Weirddave were presented at the reception to the Imperial March- it was quite cool.
I have always thought I would walk down the aisle to the traditional here comes the bride blah blah blah, but a friend of mine recently walked to one of the movements from The Planets, which I may steal for my own one day.
First dance will definitely be to Moonlight Sonata by the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
It’s nice to know that some people have the same tastes I do, like Sapphire Bullet - tradition, easy, a nice romantic touch. Not that some of your choices wouldn’t be, but…well, I will just add my favorites:
“Throught he Years” by Kenny Rogers - even though I might start crying (and yeah, I’m a guy b/c it reminds me of my wonderful, now deceased grandparents;
Reminiscing, forget who did it, but you know, starts out “Gridyay night, it was late, I was walkin’ you home.”…etc. Really great song about growing old together.
I love good, wholesome sitcomes, and if I coudl find an audio of it, I might just get the song “Forever,” as done in Jesse & Becky’s wedding on “Full House,” int here somewhere, too. It’s a really beautiful one.
