For the Older Crowd: What's the most recent Pop song or artist that really appeals to you?

I find myself liking most of what Imagine Dragons has put out.

At 54 yo I found most of the music playing on the radio was the same stuff I’ve listened to for too many years. Then I ran across a public radio college station, WNTI Centenary in NJ. It’s very refreshing to hear new music(new to me at least) when I’m driving. Discovered Hozier, David Gray, California Wives, Spottiswoode & his enemies, Nick Waterhouse, and a bunch of others.

I’m 57 and really don’t keep up with “new” acts anymore. The last new music I bought was in the 90s. Artists like Todd Snider, Nerf Herder, Presidents of the United States of America. The only music I buy now is new material from “classic” artists such as Joe Walsh, ZZ Top, or Aerosmith.

I’m 53 now, and from about 1996-2011, I hardly listened to any contemporary pop music, and was very retro in my listening habits.

In the past 3 years, my 10 yer old son has forced me to listen to a LOT more hip hop and top 40 stuff, and while I don’t love it, we’ve found a few songs and acts we both like.

Currently, both of us like “Come With Me Now” by the Kongos.

Thing is, I’ve always thought of music as something to LISTEN to, while my son thinks of it as something to DANCE to. That makes it hard for us to find common ground. My classic rock CDs leave him cold, because you can’t DANCE to them.

Indeed, I tried playing one of my old Zeppelin CDs for him, and I laughingly told him “Your grandmother HATED this music when I was a teenager.” He listened for about 30 seconds and then said, “I can see why.”

Sigh. Kids these days…

Sixty-one here. sigh. I’m another one that gets new music only from SNL, movies, inadvertently TV (cannot stand singing competitions). I like Pink, Gotye, ( Og save me) Blurred Lines, Pharrel, Sam Smith, John Legend…I’d have a bigger list if I could remember all the music I didn’t FF through on SNL or some of the amazing music I hear over closing credits. But music is now something that happens to be on, not something I seek out. I would seek out more over my two hours of daily commute, but my carpooler only listens to classic rock, so there’s a lost opportunity. I’m way more open to rap & hip hop than Mr singular, so I do enjoy busting him when he is enjoying something in that genre without realizing it.:stuck_out_tongue:
One really funny aspect of this is that I listen to the Kevin & Bean podcast out of LA every day, & just from names of bands I recognize from that source that have been named in this thread, I bet I would really enjoy them. They are discussed & interviewed & advertised heavily on that podcast, but since it’s free, there is no music contained on the podcast.:smack:

I still tend to think of U2 as that ‘new rock band’.

Naw, they’re modernist garbage. When I was a teenager in the late 70s, I promised myself that I wouldn’t be like those old people who only listen to music popular when they were young. Now I don’t even like music popular when I was young. 1948 is about the latest for me.

I’m 52, and I had no trouble finding a few songs on the 2013 list that I like: “Get Lucky”, “Cups”, “Applause” and a couple others.

There are some good songs every year.

I’m in my 50s. I think Fun. is okay, and some Pitbull. I like a certain amount of Dem Bow/Urban/Reggaeton. Some Usher. Gaga is sometimes entertaining. Psy was fine the first hundred times.

You do understand that not everyone listens to the same stations as you, right?

A few years back, my chorus did an '80s concert. I mentioned to one of the guys that only a couple of the songs were vaguely familiar to me. He answered basically the same way you did, assuming that everyone who was alive in the '80s knew all the '80s songs. I told him that I spent most of the '80s taking care of people with AIDS, and didn’t have time to listen to the radio.

Oh, and I like bhangra a lot.

I never liked pop much, although years when hair metal and grunge were popular were more simpatico. The most recent pop song that I could remember liking and remember the title and artist was Paper Planes by MIA, which was 35 in 2008.

People saying “I like heaps of new music, like the Black Keys,” are, IMO, missing the point. The Black Keys aren’t a pop band, they’re a rock band. “Lonely Boy” (2011) was their biggest (maybe only) hit single, but I couldn’t find it in the top 100 lists.

44–do I count?

Imagine Dragons, Lorde and Florence + the Machine. Imagine Dragons caught me initially because of the video for Radioactive, but Bleeding Out has become my favourite, with Demons a close second.

Florence + the Machine: I like the sense of drama. Ceremonials was very firmly #1 on my iPod for quite a while.

Lorde: Royals caught me initially, but Tennis Court, 400 Lux and Ribs finished the job of making me a fan.

I’m 55. I tend to notice individual songs rather than artists.

Most recently, I think that “Happy” by Pharrell and “Bruises” by Train are outstanding. Both songs seem to convey sincere feelings, and show outstanding craft in songwriting, performing and production. Tellingly, both songs are by artists who’ve been around a while.

Going back a few more years, “You Get What You Give” by the New Radicals always grabbed me. The song’s wiki entry quotes praise from a number of older luminaries, including Joni Mitchell. It has the added benefit of being hard to categorize by genre. And while I rarely pay much attention to a song’s lyrics, the message that you can’t get something for nothing is even more remarkable considering that the song was written during the fabled dot com boom.

I’m 60.

I really like what I’ve heard from Lorde, Pink, Fun, The Lumineers and Adele.

53 here. I think the last CD I ever bought was Southern Mississippi All Stars. I used to be a music snob, but things have changed. Before music was PC data, albums were a more immersive experience between artist and listener.

Out of the top 100 list the OP posted, I have Radioactive, Sail, and My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark. I’m not familiar with the other 97. I mainly listen to college radio. I’m tired of classic rock, and Top 40 hits all sound alike.

Somebody gave me an ITunes gift card a few years ago. I haven’t used it all up yet. I buy a few catchy tunes here and there, but I have no desire to seek out entire albums any more. Otherwise, I’ll go to YouTube and rip audio tracks.

I suppose recording artists are only making money from tours and TV performances these days. Kind of a shame, but that’s technology for ya.

Well, I’m about 50, and I listen to a lot of new music every day. But looking at those specifically-linked lists made me feel like a hermit. I had barely heard any of those tunes, and none of the few I was familiar with had any staying power. But when I clicked to see the 2012 list, I found the Neon Tree’s, “Everybody Talks”. It caught my ear when I heard it on someone’s commercial that year and i went to seek it out. I thought it was/is a great power-pop tune.

ETA: I like what I’ve heard from Pink, but I didn’t recognize any of her tunes on those lists.

The only one that springs to mind for me at the minute is Jackie Evancho.
I would listen to her singing the phone book.

The last song I liked well enough to pay for was k d laing’s version of Hallelujah. from 2004.

The ad that precedes the song is for a step-in bathtub. I guess I’m not the only one in my age group who likes the song.

Over 60. Really like Daft Punk and Royksopp.
