Those over 35 do you like new music from new artist

After a person reach"s a certain age they usually prefer artist from their generation then newer acts does anyone over 35 like new performers??

Oh yes. B. 1955

At this age I am mostly frustrated of the lack of channels into finding new bands as I don’t go out as much now.

Here are three off of my running playlist. I am not a huge fan of current pop though.

Margaret Glaspy
Esmé Patterson
Pixx

B 1968

Very rarely do I hear something new I like, But music is my big “Those damn kids” thing.

Else wise I’m pretty tolerant of kids stupid hair/clothes/lingo:rolleyes: Those are all peer driven, and my shit was just as dumb, but music…:smack::eek: How can they listen to this crap?

I don’t care for music from my own era (1960s) because I am now forced to listen to it in every supermarket and I was already tired of it.

I rarely like pop music of any era anyway. So repetitive and banal, with rare exceptions. I like Sufjan Stevens at the moment. Looking for more musicians in that direction.

Try playing it at 78 speed…

I would say yes. Zeppelin, Hendrix, and Aerosmith, go well with Metallica and Staind (well the tamer side of Metallica and Staind). And yes I realize those are not the most current bands.

But I agree with Madonna, a lot of new music sounds the same. I’ll go further and say it’s formula driven and lacks creativity. This is not a blanket criticism but Og some if it is criminally lame.

B. 1960

Hell, I didn’t like th’ new music when I was YOUNG. Around 1974 I started listening almost exclusively to art music (“classical”) and jazz, starting with Bird/Diz/Monk ‘40s bebop and gradually stretching into older and newer sounds.

I did love the Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks, Dylan, the Band, and the Dead, most of which were contemporary artists, albeit those whose careers started when I was in short pants. And I went to the Talking Heads concert in Central Park when I was 18.

The last act I enjoyed while in their heyday was the Replacements, who basically folded by 1990.

I’m 53. I admit, my musical tastes are, generally, oriented towards stuff from the '70s and '80s.

That said, I do try to find some music that I can enjoy, from newer groups. Reading Rolling Stone does actually seem to help me stay in touch with newer music. Some which I like:

  • Fitz & the Tantrums
  • Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats
  • Of Monsters and Men
  • Dawes

Admittedly, several of these newer groups do have an intentionally retro sound to them, which may be part of why I like them.

Pixx ran my cat out of the room but so does Zeppelin. I would much rather listen to that selection than the drivel played at bars.

wow Pixx is really doing a number on the cat. He’s tearing around like he’s on cat-nip.

Born 1970

My taste in music would never have won any hipster-points - I’ve always been able to find something I like on the radio - and now is no exception. Some acts I’ve really gotten into over the last 5 years…

The Script
Avicii (RIP :frowning: )
Fitz and the Tantrums (already mentioned I see)
Gorillaz
Foster the People
Maclemore
Lorde
Jess Glynn
and - so sue me - Arianna Grande.

I don’t feel like an old lady, I just look like one…

B. 1963

Yes, constantly.

My music collection is around 900 songs, and only 22 of those are from this decade, so I think I’m a good example of what the OP is wondering about. (Born 1970.) But I do really like those 22 songs!

Artists in that mix include Adele, Rihanna, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Imagine Dragons, Royal Blood, Avicii, James Blake, Pharrell Williams, Maroon 5, Kesha, and Lorde. Almost exclusively their biggest hits, so you can probably guess the songs on my list just from seeing the artist names.

Plus a couple from Train’s California 37 (released in 2012), but I’ve been a fan of Train since the 90s so that doesn’t really count.

I just added a new song a couple weeks ago from 2013: Natalia Kills - Problem. Total guilty pleasure, but one of the perks of getting older is you no longer care. Apparently she was mean to someone on a reality show which tanked her career, but damn I like that song.

I am 60, and I’ve always prided myself in at least attempting to stay current.

Coincidentally, on a long drive home today I put the Billboard Hot 100 playlist on Spotify. I heard maybe the first 10 songs, and every single one of them I would consider absolute shit.

Three (I think) were by Lil Wayne. I lost track of the number of “bitches”, “niggas”, and “fucks” he spouted.
mmm

Upon further examination of the playlist on my iPhone, a few others:

  • Daft Punk
  • Mumford and Sons

I’m 35. I’ve really been liking Dua Lipa lately. I also really like Imagine Dragons.

That being said, I get a lot of music recommendations from my mom. She’s 66, and last time I was over she made me listen to Rainbow Kitten Surprise. So it’s definitely possible.

Late 50s. I hear at least one new song every week in my dance class. I like many of them as much as I like songs from my era (which I guess means punk, ska, and new wave).

  1. Shit, yeah.

I’m older than 50. Just started getting into metal.

I’m 39. Love new music, especially hip hop.

There’s tons of stuff out there I don’t like, but there’s tons left to love.
