For Those Interested in the Harry Potter movie....

That explains why I can’t find it.

They’re supposed to. That way, the kid who’s playing Harry grows up just like the (ahem) “real” Harry does. As far as Rickman and the others, I dunno. And you really start to get worried about the older actors: Dame Maggie & Richard Harris. It would be too bad if one of them had to be replaced!

That timer (currently 258 days) is going to make me a very impatient Gryffindor before November rolls around.

The trailer is really cool–for some reason, the scene of Harry walking through the snow with Hedwig on his arm particularly appeals to me. There’s something neat about the composition of it. I’m also impressed with the architecture–they’ve made some good location choices.

Hufflepuff?!?!? BS, I should be in Ravenclaw!

Ravenclaw
Hufflepuff
Slytherin then Finally after a four attempts,
Gryffindor
So am I really a Ravenclaw?
Damnit I already bought my HP pen! (I went for blue with blue ink and lights up a rather astonishing shade of BLUE). OMG, I am Ravenclaw, huh? (I knew I should have went for dark blue/maybe purple, purpleink, green light!) I still want a tree monkey damnit!

Hufflepuff! I registered as “Duine” (Dween)- I’ll put it here so I won’t forget it. Hagrid looks plenty mountainous to me- just as I pictured him. As for age, he’s part giant- giants are probably pretty long-lived.

Feh. I got Slytherin. Stupid hat. Been working too hard.

I’m in Gryffindor. With a lion for its emblem, it must be good!

GRYFFINDOR!!!

Worship me!

I’m a Hufflepuff, but that’s surely a mistake. I know I’d be in Ravenclaw. Right? Right?

Stupid sorting hat.

Gryffindor.

I really have better things to with my time, but after I saw this thread, I went to the website, and I am ashamed to admit that I really had fun with that Sorting Hat. The first few times I tried it, it kept putting me in Gryffindor. Then it became a game. I tried to see which combination would put me in Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. Slytherin was the most difficult to get into. I wasn’t satisfied until I got placed in all 4 houses. I think the Sorting Hat is biased in favor of Gryffindor.
About the movie, I just don’t know. I mean, I’m biased towards the books. Most movie versions that I have seen of books don’t do those books justice at all. I’m morbidly curious to see how Sorecer’s Stone is going to be messed up in this movie. Part of the allure of reading the Harry Potter books is that they allow you to imagine what places like Hogwarts are like. The Harry Potter books are great because they provide a forum for the child in all of us to envision what it’s like to see magic used as an everyday thing because it takes us out of the narrow confines of our world, forces us to conceptualize a reality constructed around a different set of rules, and ultimately encourages us to question the world we live in. I want to believe that the director’s interpretation of Sorcerer’s Stone will encourage that level of critical thinking, but I have my doubts. Oh well, guess I’ll find out soon enough, and maybe it won’t be so bad. [sigh]

Okay, I want to ask a question of those who have read “Goblet of Fire.” I just read it a couple of months ago, and I was about halfway through it when my cousin (who reads the books, but hasn’t yet read that one) told me that someone dies during the book. So, of course I rushed home to get through the book, because I was so worried about who it might be, because my cousin said that it was supposed to be a HUGE shock, and very emotional. For those who haven’t read it yet…

SPOILER SPACE…

Hope that was enough space. Anyway, I thought it would be Dumbledore, or Professor McGonagall, or Hermione or Ron. But it turns out to be Cedric. Now, I thought that was sad, and I was a little surprised because it happened so abruptly. But I thought it was going to be a main character, and I don’t think of Cedric as being all that major a character. Maybe I just had it built up too much, but I wasn’t as shocked as I was hoping. What were your thoughts? (Not that I was hoping it would be any of those people. I was kinda hoping it would be one of the Dursleys, though. Oh well.)

Hi, y’all! I’ve been lurking for a while, but this is my first post. I don’t mean to have my first entrance onto this most excellent board be something techy, but I can’t seem to view the trailer (I’m on a Mac, and I understand from the message board they have up there that other people have had trouble with viewing it on a Mac). Has anyone had success in viewing the trailer in Mac-land? (OS 9, if it matters; 266 MHz G3). Thanks!

The worst of it, IMO, was the, offhanded way Voldemort did it, and, in fact, the fact that Cedric was peripheral to everything. It was just cold, random violence, really.

THAT is what shocked me.

Lindyhopper- I haven’t had any trouble viewing it with my old beat-up 150mhz Power Computing Mac Clone. I’ve got OS 9 onboard, and don’t have any trouble. Welcome to the board!

Thanks, Sigmundex. Which method did you choose to view it? I tried both QuickTime (no video, only audio) and RealPlayer (spotty video, only audio in slowest mode). Any assistance would be helpful!

And Tengu, I agree. You couldn’t see it coming until it was too late, and it happened so quickly and without apparent malice; just minor annoyance. It was chilling that Voldemort could kill so off-handedly.

Oh, and by the way, I was sorted into Slytherin (ugh!) until I said I would return the sack of Galleons; Gryffindor then! Yea!

imagine that… soulsling in ssssssssslytherin…

As the father of a six-year old, whose mother read him the first three books, I was very surprised to see the changes that occur in Goblet of Fire. We haven’t read it to him or let him read it yet (he knows he’s a bit young for some of this stuff, and he’s actually fine with that.) Fortunately, we had a heads up that the latest tale was a bit too graphic for younger kids, so we were able to make that decision. I’m sure the death of Cedric, and the dark twist the story takes–coalescing into the battle of Good vs. Evil, came as a shock to many kids and parents. After all, the first three books are fantastical, mystical, but really just innocent stories of youthful adventures. We know they’re going to get into trouble; that the bad guy is going to show up and scare us; and that in the end, Harry and friends will win and the bad guy will be vanquished. In Goblet of Fire that familiar formula takes a very different turn, and for the first time we see just how treacherous the enemy is.

Myself, I can’t wait for the film. I share concerns about whether the film can do justice to the book, but I’ve pretty much resigned myself to not expect too much–enjoy the imagery, the magic brought to life, and rely on the books for the greater meaning and deeper subtext. The trailer looks like they’ve done a good job remaining faithful to the story elements and imagery–we’ll have to wait and see that they didn’t screw up the plot and make it too “Hollywood”.
