Today (23 January) is a big day for SDMB memes. It’s the 63rd anniversary of when the bathyscaphe Trieste went to the bottom of the Challenger Deep. “The two men spent twenty minutes on the ocean floor.” Wikipedia link: Trieste (bathyscaphe) - Wikipedia Mundane, pointless, and old school, yet I had to share.
Deep, man, real deep.
Man, time flies! Sixty-three years already.
And the latest photo from the depths taken last week showed an empty beer bottle down there. Sigh.
And then I showed up nine months later. Coincidence? I think not.
Was it your mother who left the beer bottle down there?
hmmmm…speaking of memes…
what ever happened to 1920’s death rays ?
Well, this 1920s Ray died.
After passing 9,000 metres (30,000 ft), one of the outer Plexiglas window panes cracked, shaking the entire vessel.
That must’ve been … disconcerting.
I remember as a little kid reading about this and seeing pics of the vessel, which looked a little like a submarine. So, I thought it was basically a ‘strongly built’ sub. Then, as an adult, I found out that no, these guys were cramped into that tiny little ball under the ‘sub.’ Definitely not for the faint of heart or claustrophobic.
I think they were locked up and taken away when someone tried to use them as a heat source for pan-fried semen.
No, no . . I think they were lost were lost in this order:
- Pan-fried semen
- Airplane on a treadmil
- Hi Opal
- 1920’s style Death Ray
As long as death rays don’t ensue we’ll all be OK.
Wasn’t the meme about experimenting with lesbianism?
Surely Og would Smash before it got to that. Or to the original subject of ensuing.
I hope Og won’t smash that. It would hurt. Lots.
And now seriously, I remember in grade school one of my readings was on this expedition. To think it was so recent then…. Then again it was still part of an age for those sorts of “first man to do X/be at Y” kinds of things.
Well, it was fated to happen. Don Walsh, the sole surviving member for that history-setting achievement has passed. When all our heroes are gone, who will replace them?
Marvel Comics vigilantes with glandular problems?
Gosh I miss Opal.
