For volcano watchers - maybe you'll get lucky! {Kilauea may be erupting}

Yaay! Now two hours later roughly 1530 ET = 1030 HT on 11/5 it’s flowing a bunch of thin lava from the closer outlet but no fountaining.

Spot checking the last 12 hours it’s done everything from low fountains to nothing at all. But there’s been lots of time spent flowing, so the total 12 hour volume is pretty decent.

Next episode just started - Pele is putting on a good show now, but if recent experience is any guide it won’t last very long, so check it out right away!

Hooray!!1! That’s spectacular!

Now at 1745 ET = 1245HT it’s really going; spewing in many directions with great vigor.

Prior to about 1110 HT there was nothing for hours. Starting around 1110 HT there was a little intermittent spurting from the close vent from V3 cam’s POV. By 11:18 both vents are flowing and fountaining gently, with the farther vent having the greater volume but no great pressure or vigor.

Then between 11:18 and 11:22 things very quickly get very vigorous. Quite the ramp-up.

From V1 it looks a little like one vent which splits, but V3 more clearly shows two exit points.
Some real shaking on V3

Brian

Yeah. v3 cam is rockin’ and rollin’ Been about 2 hours of very vigorous fountaining so far. I just wish one or another cam had audio.

Early one the right vent from V3’s POV did have a prominent split, back when the left vent wasn’t nearly as vigorous as the right one..

I’ll offer a WAG that it’s extremely windy and that’s what’s causing the shaking. I live about 40 miles away, and of course Hawai‘i Island is famous for its microclimates, so the fact it is inclement and windy at my house right now isn’t conclusive. But it looks totally foggy and nasty through the v2 camera, so they may be experiencing some rainy/windy conditions there as well.

I’m guessing v2 is looking through the smoky stuff venting along with the lava. I sure don’t know the geometry though.

I checked the cams this morning and saw the crater floor was all aglow, telling me that I had just missed a good show.

Rats.

Even rewinding back 12 hours to ~2200ET = 1700HT there’s nothing going on but cooling lava with mild steam/smoke from the vents.

Just now, ~1115 ET = 0615HT on 11/21, both vents are steaming/smoking vigorously. It’s also obvious from the illumination that there’s fresh glowing lava not far below the lips of the vents.

Spot-checking the last 12 hours I didn’t see anything eruptive, and in fact the current activity seems to be the strongest. Perhaps we’ll get some flow and ideally some fountaining here later today.

One can only hope.

I didn’t get back to check on it until now, ~0630ET = 0130HT on11/22, but as of now and for much of the overnight it’s been intermittently flowing lava from the closer leftmost vent as seen from V3. No signs of recent fountaining.

ISTM the lava is flowing downhill unusually quickly. Which I attribute to it being extra hot. Which might be a good sign for something more energetic about to happen.

Episode 37 just started! Two fountains at the moment, neither tremendously high but maybe just working up to the final height.

Yaay!

It looks from v3’s POV that one of the fresh vents isn’t fountaining at all; just gently steaming/smoking. What looks like two fountains is sorta just one spraying in two directions. Assuming I’m seeing correctly, that confuses me a bit.

@CairoCarol: Do you get some sort of automated alert when it starts to spray? Is that something any of us could subscribe to also?

I do get automated alerts, although I’m usually aware of the eruption before I get the notice, since I monitor the tiltmeter and webcams regularly when an eruption is imminent. In fact I posted here before I received the email.

You can sign up too, at the Volcano Notification Service.

Still fountaining, with the best views on V1 and V3.

Thanks for the link @

!

I was able to see some very mild lava glow from the eastern rift zone 10 or so years ago. I’ll be there in early January and hoping the display hangs on till then. Fingers crossed.

Aaannd … Show over.

At 0400 ET 11/26 = 2300 HT 11/25 it was still fountaining solidily but declining. Then it gave a last hurrah rally around 0430 ET 11/26 = 2330 HT 11/25 to large fountaining. Then by 0445/2345 it wasn’t even oozing; just smoking / steaming. But with lots of fresh glowing lava across the crater floor.

It’s going again.

Double fountains again!

It’s now going hard enough I think it may be threatening to destroy v3 cam. Rewinding over the last our-ish I see the big fountain is pretty much aimed right at it but doesn’t have enough range. Yet. V3 is totally in the smoke/steam ash zone.

That is one heck of a fountain. Yaay!1! I’m especially enjoying that it’s spraying off to the side, not just straight up. Make a pretty arch of fire.

And thanks to @CairoCarol I did get my VNS email alert. Which I didn’t immediately notice.
