For volcano watchers - maybe you'll get lucky! {Kilauea may be erupting}

Very impressive. Thank you for arranging a festive Christmas eruption. Some years we have to settle for just a lump of cold lava rock.

Kinda handy the fountain isn’t fully behind that ridge from our / the camera’s POV.

Very cool!

Nice show but its not going to displace my burning yule log on the flat screen for Christmas Eve. :upside_down_face:

Yay ! Cheers Pele, merry Christmas.

Rather the opposite, I think.

~8 hours in the size of the fountaining has shrunk ~30% but the supply of fresh lava at the base has grown a lot. Yaay!

And now, after a pause … IT’S BAAAACCK! Looking at the live feed, it’s almost as good as when it first started.

Pele likes to keep us guessing.

Very impressive. I haven’t seen that kind of lava fountain from Kilauea in a while. This is Pele’s way of doing Christmas decorations I guess.

My sharp-eyed spouse noted that they moved the camera focus a little closer to the fountaining about 3 hours ago (so probably around 1pm December 24, Hawai’i Standard Time). The fountaining has indeed returned, and it is an impressive sight - but we’re also seeing it a little more up close and personal now, so direct comparisons to what the camera was showing when the eruption first started may not be valid.

Yikes. I would not want to be the guy that got the job of walking out there to move the camera.

Carol, is any of this activity visible from the viewing spots along the road in Volcanos National Park?

Pretty good bet they just clicked on the [zoom in] button on the camera’s website control panel. Not so hazardous a duty as all that.

I am in California visiting my son, so can’t personally vouch for anything. But based on previous eruptions and visits, I’d say yes - especially at night there should be a good view from the viewing area on the opposite side of Halema’uma’u, and if you just drive/walk along Chain of Craters Road, you’ll get a good view of the glow. (This is strictly speculation, though.)

So as all of those who obsessively watch volcanoes know, Pele has been an on-again-off-again tease recently, starting to erupt and pausing 5 times now. As I post, it is in pause, but the prediction seems to be that it will likely start fountaining again soon.

Anyhow, we were too booked to go see the eruption right away, but on the first night of the fourth episode, we were free, so decided to go check it out. We were glad we did, as within hours of our visit it paused again.

Here’s one of my pics:

Here’s a screen shot from 02:10 on 2025/01/24 …
What are all the (stationary) dots of light all over the place ?

eta : don’t know why this image isn’t appearing in the post …

Those dots are just cooling lava on the surface of the crater.

Ah. Thanks CC !

Nice bit of lava spewage going on atm !
:volcano:

Nice - the camera has been fogged every time I’ve checked it.

Wow! It looks like spewing has been happening for the past 12+ hours! https://www.youtube.com/usgs/live
