For volcano watchers - maybe you'll get lucky! {Kilauea may be erupting}

It looks like she’s quieted down, but there is still a nice lava lake going on.

We weren’t lucky enough to have seen it erupt when we were there in August. The Steam Vents were the most active thing at that time.

Still, Volcanoes National Park is extremely cool, eruptions or not. It’s super neat to know exactly where it’s erupting relative to the places I visited.

Erupting right now … look quick, some of these eruptions last only a few hours.

Yaay! Looks like the same fissure, and the same shaped lava fountain, as last time.

Nice show. It was bubbling this morning, so I was hoping something would happen.

Go Pele !

It is - this is its 9th episode since it started back in January.

Quite lovely ATM, as the skies over Hawai’i darken, but it seems to me that it’s already weakening. So watch NOW if you want to catch this episode.

She’s still going, but not as powerful as earlier. It looks like another fissure has opened up.

I love watching the lava rivers flowing in the dark.

Aww drat, looks like I missed that, and it’s back to the original pair that have been going off together each time since December. Last night, the one in front was mostly obscuring the one in back, but every now and then it would subside enough to see the back one was still going at about the same strength.

I stand corrected. Every time I looked, the one in back was obscured, so I didn’t know it was there.

And as of now = 2:30pm Eastern, 0930 Hawaii time, on 2/12 there’s nothing but outgassing from the various fissures. Show over.

Come sunset there might still be some glowing hotspots in the crater floor to enjoy, but the lava flow is done for now.

She started up again.

… and is fading already. Not too surprising.

Yeah - it’s like she waited for me to post.

And possibly gearing up for episode 11. USGS says that as soon as this episode stopped, the crater started inflating again. That usually means magma is gathering near the surface and an eruption is expected. We’ll see!

Pele is such a tease.

And today (February 21) the USGS daily update says: Preliminary estimates suggest a new eruptive episode may begin as early as Sunday, February 23 in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.

So, it might be worth tuning into the webcam from time to time. I came close to seeing the exact moment when episode 8 started (it was starting to spatter again, not just glow and smoke) but I have yet to be watching when the fountaining actually begins. Of course, you can always view it by rewinding the feed, but I think it would be cool to actually see it live. So I’m going to keep checking in fairly often just in case.

Pele is at it again! It must have just started, as I haven’t received a USGS notice yet. I just clicked on the YouTube link that I have bookmarked, and saw it.

It’s not super-high fountaining - maybe because it just started? Or maybe this will be a weaker version of some past episodes. We’ll see how long it lasts. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is gone by morning, Hawai’i time (it’s about 6:45pm in Hawai’i as I type).

Yep, it’s getting higher.
