I was thinking back to the 3 little pigs, thanks to a joke on Neal Boortz’s talk show… Commenting on if a pig can talk… So I got to thinking… what other parts of the story are impossible? …
Are Wolves capable of puffing (Blowing… not Exhaling) ?
What do you mean by blowing? Dogs (and I assume wolves) often forcibly exhale air to dislodge material. If that’s not blowing I’m not sure what you mean. Dogs do it to move particles from a surface into the air so they can smell them. If you have dogs you will have probably noticed this behaviour when you have returned after petting a strange dog. When a dog does it on the ground it is even more noticeable that they are blowing up dust.
Wolves don’t have lips like we do so they can’t direct air that way, but I think you need to define blowing coz you sure aren’t using the dictionary definition: “To expel a current of air, as from the mouth or from a bellows”. Obviously wolves can blow.
Well, the shape of the wolf’s lips and jaws would seem to preclude the “you just put your lips together and blow” form of blowing. So I doubt the wolf gets the directed forceful blast that a human can generate for purposes of blowing birthday candles out and the occasional straw hut down.
For forceful exhalation, though, I would have to nominate the whale. They don’t call it the blowhole for nothing. A humpback whale can empty and refill its giant lungs in less than two seconds. http://www.aqwa.com.au/humpback.html.
Regrettably, whales and huts of any description are not likely to be in the kind of proximity that would allow any rigorous testing of the power of huffing and puffing (except in the kinds of situations where you’ve been doing some huffing and puffing of your own, if you know what I mean).
