'Forgotten' songs from the 60's (i.e. 1964 to 1974ish)

Good to know. There are apparently some wide gaps in my musical education. :frowning:

I think you’ll really like the delfonics if you havent heard them yet.

I have heard them, but I couldn’t name any of their works right offhand.

This thread is right in my wheelhouse. 1964-1974 were my formative music-obsessed years. And when “sharing” music on Napster was a thing, I launched an effort to gather all my favorites from those years…so a lot of these obscure songs show up on my playlist.

I can’t believe someone mentioned Seatrain. I thought my ex-wife had bought the only copy ever sold.

My contributions:

Sons of Champlin, the whole album “Loosen Up Naturally” and specifically the song, “Get High”.
Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, “Never Ending Song of Love”
Rolling Stones, “Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby…”
Donovan, “Hurdy Gurdy Man”
Paul Revere and the Raiders, “(Him or Me) What’s It Gonna Be”
Bobby Bloom, “Montego Bay”
Edwin Starr, “Twenty Five Miles”

Here’s some seldom heard Donovan that mustn’t be forgotten:

Jersey Thursday
Sunny Goodge Street

My 2nd-favorite Animals song. Funny story: I’ve always pictured this song set in some gritty, grimy English factory/mill town (probably because of its association with The Animals.)

I recently saw “Beautiful (the Carole King Musical)”, the jukebox musical that’s actually about the friendly competition between 2 couples: Carole King & Gerry Goffin, and Barry Mann & Cynthia Weill – with music from both.

I was stunned to find out that Barry Mann, nice Jewish boy from New York City, wrote “We Gotta Get Out of This Place.”

I associate it with Milwaukee, since I once had to live there for 18 months.

Dave Mason put out a wonderful album, Alone Together in 1970. Here’s “Only You Know and I Know.

Someone has mentioned Quicksilver Messenger Service, but not Nicky Hopkins’s “Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder.

Here is one that hasn’t just been forgotten since the 1970’s but was forgotten in the 1970’s.

A Stone’s Throw Away” - Barbara Keith.

I remember listening to this song in the record store, not buying the album, but going home and having this song as an earworm until I just had to have it. I went back to the store and…no albums! No albums in any local store and I would search the used and rarity bins every one in a while. When YouTube and iTunes became available, I searched there. Finally, about 10 years ago, until I found a CD available online (from the singer). So, from 1972 to about 2008, nowhere to be found.

Now that’s forgotten!

This song kept ABBA’s “Money, Money, Money” from reaching No. 1 on the UK charts the final week of 1976:

Believe it or not! :dubious:

I humbly submit…

Linda Lyndell - What a Man (1968)

Made famous in the nineties by Salt N Pepa.

Lyndell, from Gainesville, Florida, received death threats from the KKK just for being a white soul singer. She left the music industry and wasn’t heard from again for decades.

Maybe my eyes are bad, but I can’t believe I’ve seen several mentions of Philadelphia soul, and nobody has mentioned that most sublime group: The Stylistics.
