My father died of cancer and the side effects of the treatment were horrific. If it’s inevitable, I’m not going to prolong things pointlessly.

Yeah, my father’s doctor said to him, basically - you have cancer in at least 6 places. We can treat you and you will die painfully, or we can medicate you and let the disease run it’s course. I would choose the latter.

I don’t blame her, if prospects for any kind of a normal life are remote, and at her age this seems like a reasonable and emotionally healthy decision.

Having said that, I could not believe the news story said “the wife and mother of two presidents.” That is, I couldn’t believe it until I saw that it was USA Today, the death camp for editorial judgment. For any who wonder why I say this, it would be correct to say “the wife of one president and mother of another.” The way they put it sounds distinctly Oedipean, if not physically impossible.

I don’t remember how long ago it was but I saw her on TV when she was speaking at some women’s college. She said that she thought there could be a future First Spouse in the audience, and whoever he might be she wished him well. She got a lots of laughs for that.
