Indycar experimented with that sort of idea for qualifying in long beach a few years ago. They made different finish line for qualy only just before pit entrance. Not sure if they still do it as I rarely watch indycar, let alone indycar qualy. But it seemed like a decent idea.
Thinking about it a bit, they could do it with just the infrastructure already in place. I think all the tracks are divided into three sectors, with timing sensors embedded in the track at the sector boundaries. So a qualifying run would leave the pits, warm up the tires in sectors 1 and 2, the qualifying time would be sectors 3, 1, and 2, then cool down in sector 3 and return to the pit.
Is there any reason not to do it that way? Maybe two sectors aren’t enough to get the tires fully up to temp.
The opposite question is, is there any good reason to do it that way. Fewer cars will be on cool-down laps to interfere with those which are still qualifying, but maybe that’s not the biggest issue. If cars on warmup laps are the bigger problem, my idea wouldn’t do much to fix that.
Normally I dislike the OTT versions of the American national anthem that is performed at these events but that was beautiful.
He sang it well, but I just wanted it to end and he was singing it soooo slow.
It’s a relatively short anthem compared to others.
Anyway, come on Lando!
(accidentally typed Max originally )
Safety car wins this for Max, so put your money on a safety car.
Good race even though max won again. It wasn’t a blow out. Another couple laps and ham woulda had him. I feel bad for lando though.
Awe fucking’ell. A good race all for nothing.
Hooray for Florida Man though…I guess.
What is the world coming to when Ferrari can be disqualified?
As usual an excellent race if you ignore the guy at the front. Lando’s overtakes were fun to watch.
Lewis now breathing down Checo’s neck for second in the drivers standings …assuming Hamilton’s car passes scrutineering.
Ferrari blew it…again…as usual. Good to see Danny ric up there fighting with Russell.
I thought I’d share this here, since it’s arguably F1-adjacent.
Felt bad for Checo, tough luck. He did kind of pushthe envelope on the first turn and paid the price.
Rumors will swirl even more so now about Ricardo replacing Perez next season. Time will tell.
MtM
It wasn’t bad luck, it was bad driving.
Yeah, that was a Speculative Banzi Maneuver. Silly and Stupid.
I spent almost a year in Brazil, not far from Sao Paulo, and that change in the weather was no Suprise to me. Nice out, clouds blow in, bikes getting washed down the road a couple of minutes later.
Never seen rain like that ever since. Stupendous. And contagious!
Martin Brundle’s Comedic Disaster of a Gridwalk really set up the early stage of the race (so far).
What a Cluster.
A pretty boring race ended super exciting on the last lap!
Also, fuck machine gun Kelly. That whole incident embarrassed all of humanity.
I didn’t (and generally don’t) watch the pre-race. What are you referring to?
