Hey all, maybe you can help me with this… This has bugged me since i saw the movie so long ago. Forrest’s most famous quote (or one of them anyways) is “Stupid is as stupid does”. What the hell does that mean!!! It doesn’t make any sense! Any thoughts? WAGs?
As Dana Carvey said (in his ross perot voice) “Can i pay $7.50 to see a retard on a bench? Stupid is as stupid does, what does that mean? If you know you’re probably a retard, get on the bench!”
God WAS my co-pilot, but we crashed in the mountains and i had to eat him.
Remember, Forrest was classified as “special” and would therefore seem to be naturally “stupid”.
I think the line meant that you’re not truly stupid unless you ACT that way.
I have to admit, though I didn’t like the movie that much, I have to agree with that line of reasoning.
My thought is:
His mama always said “Stupid is as stupid does”. In other words, the way he was mentally would make people call him stupid. But she wanted him to know that stupidity is measured by actions, not intelligence.

Voted “Most Empathetic”- can you believe that?
In short, it means that IQ isn’t the real measure of intelligence. Intelligence is measured by the way you behave.
Obviously, we’ve all known highly intelligent people who’ve made incredibly stupid decisions, and ruined their lives as a result. There are also people with far lower IQs who made the right choices, and achieved far greater things.
Sports example: I don’t know how many times I heard Terry Bradshaw referred to as “dumb,” back when he was quarterback, while Pat Haden was always referred to as “brilliant” (he was a Rhodes Scholar, after all). But somehow, when big games were on the line, “dumb” Bradshaw always seemed to know the right thing to do, while brainy Haden always seemed to make bad decisions and throw dumb, costly interceptions.
So, who was really "stupid? The RHodes Scholar, or the guy with 4 SUper Bowl rings?
The person is correct, it’s a proverb of ‘beauty’:
Beauty is a good letter of introduction
Beauty is as beauty does
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Beauty is only skin deep
