Forums have been re-organized

The SDMB forums have been reorganized into two categories in light of recent unhappiness. “Main” includes the traditional SDMB forums. “Side Conversations” will include tangential forums such as “The Barn House” that we may choose to launch from time to time. We may create additional categories in the future. The new organization is intended to indicate that these are separate commercial ventures. We invite your comments provided you remain civil.

Good work. I appreciate the distinction. Thank you for listening and responding to the dissent constructively instead of merely dismissing it out of hand.

A very sensible way to solve it, and something I would have suggested if I had known you could do that sort of restructure without resorting to “child forums.”

May I ofer a suggestion for a second “Side Conversations” forum? Promotion and discussion of non-Cecil Adams features carried by one or more of the Creative Loafing family of newspapers. It would give them some free promotion to a worldwide audience that might not be familiar with their papers, and us some interesting and useful background on the communities that their papers serve.

Thanks for doing this!

Excellent solution.

Ed, that was a great way to calm the waters. Well done indeed.

I’d just like to wish you the best of success with your book, and I look forward to having a new forums to read on the Dope regardless of their relation to the original zeitgeist of the boards. It’s either the same folks we know and love having new things to post or new folks coming by to get a taste of our way of things and maybe spicing up the rest of the forums.

I like **Poly’s **idea of continuing the idea to include more things from the Reader/CL family of publications so that our little world can serve as a potential springboard to additonal success for all things under the umbrella. You’ve got to give to get.

I don’t think enough people know or appreciate what you’ve gone through and done for us over the years Ed, and the fact that you’ve never said as much speaks volumes about you. Anyway, cheers and good luck. And thanks.

Well played, Mr. Ed. Some days I’m embarrassed to be a Doper. Just know that not all of us get our panties in a knot over such crucial issues.

Congrats on the book. When’s the book signing event?

Gleefully seconded. Thanks, Ed!

Thanks Ed. Smartly done.

And while I’m at it I think it’s shite that everyone jumped down **Tuba’s **throat for saying the same thing I just did however more briefly in some of the objection threads. Anyone who doesn’t think that we owe **Ed **more than we know hasn’t really thought about it too hard for too long.

Dude.

Well done, an excellent solution.

A good solution. Thanks.

Agreed on both points. I’ve had problems and a run in with Tuba in the past, and I’m no fan of hers, but she’s toned down a lot of the hostility I used to get from her. She’s toned it down for quite some time, in fact. But the complaints about her just grow and grow. Anymore she gets accused of being condescending and angry any time she posts anything. Frankly, I’d have blown a gasket in that pit thread if I’d been in her shoes, but she was polite and reasonable the whole time. I appreciate it.

As for Ed, I am a fan (well, except for all the times he inserted grievous errors in The Perfect Master’s text; but if Unca Cece can forgive, so can I). It’s why I’m here. They can put his name on the masthead, for all I care. Thanks, Ed, for everything you’ve done on behalf of Cecil, the Straight Dope, and the message boards.

ETA: Actually, putting his name on the masthead would be a good idea, what with all the folks likely to be confused coming from edzotti.com. I can’t decide if the reaction it would get around here would be a downside, though, or a bonus!

Nice change. And good luck with the book! (It looks like fun…I’ve added it to my mile-long to-be-read list.)

Well done, sir.

I don’t know if it was intentional, but the side conversations don’t seem to appear on my main page, tho they do appear in the lower right “forum jump” drop down. I’m fine with that - just thought you might want to know.

In the Pit they say something about arrows on a blue bar somewhere hiding forums. Sorry I hadn’t noticed that - but I’m rarely very good at (or interested in) exploring options other than what technology initially presents me.

This would make a LOT of good sense.

I don’t think anyone’s mentioned this yet, but good job, Ed

My only caveat is that the solution makes a lot of sense to me, which makes it suspect

OK, now that we’ve got that squared away, everybody needs to buy the damn book and write glowing reviews on Amazon.
