found wallet from the 70's

Can everyone PLEASE stop posting to this thread without an answer? Just a suggestion. It’s getting damn frustrating to see this thread come back up in my User CP after all this time, with no resolution.

You might be taking this thread just a little too seriously.

I think it’s good to have it bumped up. Keeps it in people’s minds.

Wow, I actually have an update! No answer, but it’s a step in some direction.

As posted earlier, on Oct 1 I sent a letter to the Social Security Admin, along with a check for $25, to try to contact Donald Eugene Ivens through them.

Today, nearly four months later, I received a reply from them. They returned my check and enclosed a form letter stating that there is no fee for the service (not what it says on their website), and that they are processing my letter forwarding request.

So, as quiet as it’s been, it appears there is still a faint glimmer of hope.

More news as it happens. This is the government we’re talking about, so it may take a while. Sorry.

Thanks, that’s encouraging. Glad to hear that you got your money back. Maybe you will be successful yet, not to mention satisfying all our curiosities.

Holy crap, an update on this and an answer to “14 k of g in a f p d” on the same day. This should be declared some type of SDMB holiday.

Where (or what) is this answer of which you speak?!

There is?! Where?!

Linky?

Of course he could be pulling your leg.

Wow… I wonder how many such requests they get, and how many of the people who are having letters forwarded to them die while the requests are being processed.

You know, I was wondering the exact same thing…

Then again, in regards to the first part, I have a friend who works at the patent office. He says it takes about 3 hours/day for him to meet his quota of work. For the remaining 7 hours, he surfs the web, goofs off, etc. Says as long as you do your quote you can’t be fired, and there’s absolutely zero incentive to do more work. You don’t get promoted, no raise, etc, so no reason to do more than you have to.

I assume the Soc Sec Admin works the same way. So, 4 months later…

No wonder Albert Einstein was able to come up with the Theory of Relativity while working as a patent clerk! It must have been the same in Germany in the early 20th century.

Mr. Ivens does not appear in the Social Security Death Index through November 2007. For decedents over 65 years of age, there is a 95% inclusion rate in the SSDI.

Nor has he appeared in Ancestry.com’s U.S. Obituary Collection, indexed daily from newspapers across the U.S.

A little bit of both I’m afraid, but in the spirit of the question, isn’t it apropriate.

The reference was regarding the thread Ask the Messiah.

Someone asks “Jesus” the question and he answered:

We must find this person!!!

I nearly signed up for SDMB as Donald Eugene Ivens but I bottled out at the last minute.

If the OP has this guy’s name, SSN, and DOB, has anyone tried pulling a credit report on him? Or is that totally illegal, unethical, and unsportsmanlike?

I don’t know about the last one, but the first two for sure.

Why is it illegal? Surely the Straight Dope can “consider him for employment” and pull a report… In fact, I am considering him for employment as his story would have value. If someone wants to PM me his SS#, I will run the check…
