Like Meatros, I too wanted to give the benefit of the doubt thinking that the intent was along the lines of “many attempts are a call for help when words fail.” But upon re-reading the comments, I can find no such intention. It does look very much like someone who thinks that a woman’s suicide attempt is just a display of melodrama.

Note: Yes, there is a discrepancy between successful suicides in male-female stats (“successful” meaning the person succeeded in dying.) Primarily because men will use more violent means to end their lives. Their intentions of self-destruction are the same.

There are so many things I would like to say to you right now, but I am so disgusted by you that I can’t put it in words. When my best friend in high school (a girl, mind you) tried to kill herself (again with the pills! A 150ct. bottle of Tylenol, washed down with a bottle of Jack Daniels), it was both a suicide attempt and a plea for attention. The only reason she’s still alive today is because her mother heard her going into convulsions. When people are desperate to do something like this, they will look for any available avenue and take it.

When did I say that pills gaurantee that someone will live? The reason they’re so popular is that one has a substantially higher probability of surviving, as is demonstrated by many a celebrity story on ET and hundreds of suicide victims in countless television dramas.

I read the thread, and responded. I saw your comment and thought “well, he’s either an ignorant fool or he’s being sarcastic. But then, it is getting rather late, so maybe I’m just reading his comment wrong.”
I saw that I, in fact, was not seeing things, and that in point of fact other people took issue with what you had to say. I, for my part, was far too tired and given to the night (i.e. sleep) to properly Pit you, so during the 30 minutes before the board went down for maintenance (and I’d hoped to post it earlier than that, but my brain was walking uphill both ways, so to speak) I wrote a rather brief and simple OP, which you have now seen.
What I wanted you to say was either why you said what you said or that you were sorry. I didn’t spend my time in bed thinking “I wonder if Eternal will say X or Y to my pit thread”. To be perfectly honest, I posted the thread and, IIRC, went straight up to bed.
You assign far too much importance regarding yourself in my eyes. Just look at the responses of mine in this thread. If I’d been that bent on knowing what you’d say I’d probably have emailed you or something. I didn’t exactly pre-write a flame or script for possible scenarios that might play out.

In my opinion, having dealt extensively with people in similar situations to norinew’s daughter, either she truly didn’t know what she was doing in the manner of how to properly kill herself (which I think is more fortunate than anything else), or it was a cry for help. In neither case is it your place to assume she didn’t want to die, since you seem to know about as much about this sort of situation as a rhinoceros knows about the betting pools in Atlantic City.
Oh, well thanks. It’s really heart-warming to know that my cousin’s suicide is “something of a tragedy”. And all those people whose deaths I cited in my second post in that thread, the ones who deaths I’d heard about before, often within days of them happening … do they add up to a whole tragedy, or maybe even two?

The reason they are so popular, IMHO has to do with the ease in getting them and that they aren’t quite as painful as slitting ones wrists and what not. Not to mention, if you do take a 60+ pills you aren’t looking to live.

Did you ever think that maybe the reason pills are a popular method could be because their is not pain? The victim falls to sleep and then dies, no pain, no worries, and it’s not like when you have a gun in your hand-it isn’t a snap judgment. If you take a lot of pills, you have plenty of time to think about dying, as opposed to the poor person who pulls a trigger.
