As with a few others in this thread, I have a wee bit of a problem with the POV espoused by Eternal. I’d like to keep Pit-worthy comments out of there especially due to the nature of the OP (asking for help with a daughter who attempted suicide), but am at the same time entirely too worn out, and flabbergasted, to do a proper job of this. I don’t intend for this to be an “Eternal, please come here and get flamed by me and lots of other people” thread; rather, I’m actually interested in seeing the reasoning behind this incredibly … interesting post of his.
So let’s have it, Eternal. An explanation, apology, whatever.
Rather that give a flip about the ridiculousness of his comment, I’m much more taken aback by the blatant inappropriateness of it being tagged onto such a sober thread, particularly from a suffering mother asking for help.
You might not want Eternal to get flamed by lots of people, but come on! Eternal’s post was so god-damned thickheaded and dumb, I swear his head must be filled with cement.
I’m going to give Eternal the benefit of doubt though, and I will assume that Eternal meant something along the lines of, “most suicides are a cry for help”.
Jesus. It sounds like he thinks that not actually committing suicide is a bad thing. “She lived? That’s AWFUL!”
I suppose someone who has never experienced the depths of depression might see it as being overly dramatic, but the not-serious suicide attempt is the most profound kind of cry for help there is. It’s a message from someone who is hurting so badly that they can’t see any other way out. You don’t really want to die, you just want the pain to STOP.
Eternal, you’ve got a lot to learn about understanding and sensitivity.
Well, it certainly seems inaccurate to the point of falsehood, bigoted, inappropriate, unbelievably rude, jerkish and downright unacceptable. But heigh ho, there may well be an explanation.
It did sound that way in a very roundabout manner. On the other hand, it also sounded to me like Eternal was saying he had killed himself a long time ago and had no respect for those who couldn’t go through with it.
Until we hear from him again, we can just think of it as “unintentionally insensitive.”
To clarify, I still think that Eternal’s comments were sexist-even when I take into account what I think he meant.
To suggest that females attempt suicide in an effort to cry for help, but males don’t, is ignorant. Personally I think that, in both cases the person attempting suicide is crying for help-that doesn’t alleviate their intent though. They do intend to end their life.
I think the difference between male and female methods of suicide (if there is a substantial difference), might have to do with a preference based on a number of different things. I don’t think the difference has anything to do with intent. As I said, both males and females intend to do the same thing; end there suffering.
Oh, Obviously, that’s why she’s in therapy and possibly going to be on medication.
And obviously, a professionals opinion that she may harm her self and asking her to sign a suicide-contract has fuck all to do with anything, as she is obviously just a pathetic little weak-willed female seeking attention.
I tried to kill myself, but I obviously didn’t really mean it, as I’m still here. And I obviously went about it the wrong way as I never used pills.
Obviously I’ve missed the fact that you’re an expert not only on suicide, but also on women.
Wow, yeah, that’s really offensive. Amazing. And so inappropriately placed.
Oh, I tried to restrain myself, but I’m such an awful nitpicker. Iampunha, dear, it’s “font”
At 5 AM, dear Laurange, when I’ve just missed being able to post this before the board went down for maintenance and I have to wait up an extra 30 mins to go to sleep, it’s whatever I can type with my eyes open;) But I did mean “fount” as in “fountain”, as opposed to “font” like courier new, times new roman, and wingdings*.
Sorry (in general), btw, about failing to link to it in the thread. I just plum fergot.
Somehow that doesn’t sound quite as fun to sing to as “I fought the law and the law won!” Let’s try something else…
When you wish upon a dictionary,
makes no difference be your cause noble or any,
when you wish upon a dictionary
your dreams, unless you’re Laurange trying to prove pun wrong,
come true.
Ew. That’s much worse. Let’s try…
I know my fount and font.
It says Laurange was wrong about … er, -mont.
Okay, I think I’ll stop trying to dig myself out of this hole.
[sub]Everything she does with dictionary
Everything she does with thesaurus
Even though th’intent is noble plenty
doesn’t help to ease the chasm with us.
Er, chasm? DAMNIT! THAT DOESN’T BLOODY MAKE SENSE![/sub]
Yup. Women are always just being histrionic. They never reallywant to die. Just typical feminine attention seeking behavior. And always with the pills. Chicks would never have the balls (tee-hee) to blow their brains out like a man would.
Bite my ass.
I don’t see any room for “benefit of the doubt” here. Eternal quite clearly made clear his stance on women with mental illness, which, IMHO, in turn says alot about his feelings on both issues.
And I’m not impressed.
“I’m sorry for giving his daughter the benefit of the doubt and assuming that if she wanted to kill herself, she would have been capable enough to actually do it.” <-- Is that what you want me to say?
Pills are a relatively easy-to-reverse and slow-acting killer, and she knew it. I don’t know why anyone would want to kill themselves by using them. What if after you’ve taking them, you realize you want to live? It would be very akward calling for help.
Also, just to clarify my opinion on suicide, which I am actively forming, I so think it’s something of a tragedy when teens kill themselves, but don’t ask me to reserve such sympathy for the elderly. You’ve had your time, old man!
