Four Weddings And A Funeral

Watching Four Weddings And A Funeral for the first time. There have been three weddings, and now they’re having a funeral. I wonder who the fourth wedding is. Hugh Grant’s character?

…no.

Huh.

Well, after three decades, I’ve finally seen it.

Kevin Kline’s character marries Tom Selleck’s

Oh wait, wrong movie.

I always liked that movie, even with Andie MacDowell in it. (“Is it raining? I hadn’t noticed.”)

I’ve always loved this movie. The performances (except for MacDowell) are wonderful. What does not hold up is the cringingly awful early 1990s soundtrack led by Wet Wet fucking Wet’s cover of “Love Is All Around.” And there is also a terrible Elton John cover. The music is generally terrible.

As a person who hates weddings, I really enjoy this movie. They show all the problems with weddings - bad music, drunks, amateurs performing under pressure, etc.

Some very funny moments too. The “mad old man” made a real impression despite having just two very brief scenes. And I liked the comedy inherent to Hugh Grant being able to understand his brother’s sign language, but nobody else. I especially like the scene where Hugh Grant is seated at a table full of his ex girlfriends.
