When I was a child in the early 70s, I recall a children’s book in which the “walk/don’t walk” signs were drawn as the hand/walking person, which I thought was odd, since all the walk/don’t walk signs I ever saw used the words.
In the 80s, I went to another city, and actually saw the hand/walking person for the first time. But when I went back home, we still had the words.
Only recently (very late 90s) have I encountered the change to pictures insteads of words in the signs where I live.
Fox 4 in Kansas City gives us some moments of hilarity. A recent promo: “An armed robber who terrorized Neighborhoood ABC has been nabbed. Find out why residents are relieved!”
Gee, I can’t imagine.
