One of my favorite Stephen King books is “Salem’s Lot.” The town priest, Fr. Callahan, briefly holds the vampire Barlow at bay with a cross, saving a little boy, before his faith fails him. Barlow then forces Callahan to drink some of the vampire’s blood and taint himself. Callahan, horrified by what he’s done, stumbles out of town, never to be seen again…
…until some recent King book (one of the Gunslinger books?) , in which I understand Callahan has returned. Tell me everything! What happened to Callahan, where is he now, has he redeemed himself, etc. Thanks!
He’s travelling with Roland and company, making his appearance in Wolves of the Calla. I haven’t read Salem’s Lot in a long time, so I can’t remember exactly how he left off. Anyway, iirc, Callahan wandered about NY, I believe. Sorry, my recollection is hazy and I have a killer headache right now. He is able to identify vampires by a blue aura(?). He says that there are three types of vamps: masters (Barlow), some in between one who can make vampires, and minor vampires (mindless, mostly). He goes around and kills them. Callahan soon realizes that he is pursued by people he calls low-men. Apparently, they don’t like his wholesale killing of vampires. They leave clues – messages, like flyers, graffiti, etc. – around whenever he has killed someone, cryptic messages that describe what he looks like, where he was, etc. Fearing the heat, and almost getting caught, he discovers the method to transverse the plains (sorry, unclear on the details). He ends up in Calla where he meets Roland. I forget if he takes up preaching again, or preaching in a new different type of way.
