Free Comic Book Day!

My small local store had a crowd packed outside the shop before it even opened!

How was yours? What’d you pick up? I got the new Robert Kirkman werewolf book, the Comics 101 book, and the “Lost Peanuts” preview (one of the nicest surprises there).

Another surprise: a free book being offered that was, as far as I could tell, EXACTLY a reprint of a book offered for $2.25 a week or three ago (the first issue of the series based on the cartoon version of the Legion of Super Heroes). I’m not exactly certain what I think of that; is that a good thing or a bad thing? Hrm…

I picked up the Viper Press introduction to their line up. I really like the two things I’ve read so far (The Lost Diaries of Eve and Dead@17) and wanted to see more.

Crowd was pretty good. I promoted it for them this week in my paper so I hope I had some positive impact.

The Peanuts collection was awesome. And the annotations made it even better. (I think the one with Schroeder whistling was not reprinted not because of the thought balloons, but because the music shown–four identical chords–makes no sense in context.)

I wanted to get the Lynda Barry book but they didn’t have it at my LCBS. I got the Bongo collection, which, along with last year’s free book, has been my only exposure to Simpsons/Futurama comics. I can’t understand why these are so bad. There are plenty of good ideas, but the timing of the jokes is constantly botched, and there’s an akwardness to the dialogue that feels to me like something translated into English from another language. (Do they outsource the comics to Korea, too? ) Maybe it’s just that they’re too true to the shows, and stuff that would work onscreen with funny voices doesn’t work on the printed page. I was surprised that the JLA book was the “real” JLA–I think I’ve only ever seen DC do kid-oriented books for Free Comic Book Day before. Since I couldn’t get the Barry, I picked out my fourth at random. Got the Umbrella Academy thing, which was OK, but not something I’ll be following up on.

I got an Owly.
mmm… Owly.
and Umbrella Academy, I missed the peanuts. I bought some PS238, too

Couldn’t get my hands on Owly or Peanuts, so I am sad. Thanks for opening that wound.
