Free Comics Day!!!

Yes, Its here, again!

I must have my boat loads of free stuff, so I guess must you. Please enjoy the tidal wave of free comics… at FREE COMIC DAY!!

OK, all you comic aficianados–which comic should I ask for? Which would you recommend from the ones listed on the site? (I used to collect Marvel a loooong time ago but now am open to anything new/interesting, since it’s free. )

I’d go for either the Dork Storm sampler or Amelia Rules!, but I’m in the mood for something goofy right now.

I’m tempted to get that Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure collection when it comes out, though…

Never been a major comic fan, but I won’t turn down free Batman if I can lay my hands on it. Are there any good stand-alone issues on the racks I should grab? (I have a couple of comic book stores near me, so getting two isn’t out of the question.)

What’s the likelihood of a store forking over a bound edition of Officer Down?

Unfortunately, the only freebies are those issues listed on the website above. Some cool comic shops will probably have freebies and offers of their own (like the Isotope Lounge in San Francisco hosting Sleeper writer Ed Brubaker), but most stores will just have the limited selection listed above, and they’ll probably only let you take one or two of them. As for stand-alone issues that probably WON’T be free, I can’t recommend Sleeper highly enough, and Sleeper Season Two #1 JUST came out on Wednesday. If you can find a copy, I highly recommend it. There are super powered individuals in the comic, but no “superheroes” and certainly no spandex “pervert suits.” Sleeper reads more like a gritty film noir or a gripping spy novel, with plenty of cyberpunk influence. For good stand-alone Batman stories, everyone seems to like the Batman comic drawn in the “animated” style–based on the art and character designs of Bruce Timm from the animated series.

Nothing from the Free Comic Book Day list is really screaming out to me, but I’ll probably pick up the Alternative Comics sampler because I don’t read enough small-press and self-published “comix.” I don’t see the point in getting another retelling of the Spider-Man origin story or a Teen Titans comic obviously aimed at little kids. Someone tell DC that they could pick a better free comic to reach a wider audience! Maybe a good issue of Brubaker’s Catwoman, with that movie drawing nearer?

Doing that would highlight that (a) the Catwoman comic is actually good, and (b) the movie appears to bear no relation to the comic.

(Incidentally, I think the new trailer for the Catwoman movie actually manages to make it look even worse than the first trailer did, and that’s quite an accomplishment. Just why did Hollywood think the world needs a rip-off of “The Crow” meets “TSP: Bast” with Halle Berry in an embarassing fetish suit, anyway?)

ArchiveGuy, the odds are good that comic stores will offer not only what’s listed on the site, but backstock that for whatever reason they still have on hand. I suggest asking the store for recommendations based on books, movies, and tv shows you enjoy. If the store’s not a fanboy’s basement (though lord knows there are plenty of those), they should be able to provide suggestions as to what you might like.

While you’re there, you might want to check into whether they still carry the 25cent issue of Hellboy that was released as a promo for the movie. It’s a standalone issue, and very very good.

Curses! Foiled again!

Why do they always schedule this on a day when I’m travelling and won’t be anywhere near a comic book store? I keep looking for a good excuse to get into comics again, too!

Thanks for the heads-up! I’ll have to head to Isotope tomorrow. You were right in your earlier suggestion; the store is pretty cool and the staff is hella friendly.
