Free Comic Book Day!

Free Comic Book Day is tomorrow!

I haven’t done that for years. Think I’ll check it out.

I have a friend who opened up a comic shop just last year and it has turned out to be a surprising success (he managed to tap in to a lot of resentment towards the only other comic shop in town). He even pulled off a coup and got a cover photo and story published in the free local weekly paper!

I think I’ll go down there tomorrow and hassle him to give me that hardcover Alan Moore “Swamp Thing” retrospective for free

Somehow, I don’t think he’ll go for it but I’m going to be a pest about it anyway.

I got to the shop late & all this year’s stuff was gone. I didn’t hit up the other local shops that might have had stuff. So I got some old stuff, they had leftovers from last year. Also looked in the cheap bins, found the penultimate ish of DC Comics Presents, w/ Blue Devil. Man, remember when Blue Devil wasn’t a downer?

Brought the two year old. Get 'em hooked young, that’s what I say.

Unfortunately, Free Comic Book Day happened to be one of the few days that I could be in a nearby city. On such visits, I always hit the very-well-stocked comic shop, and spend a half-hour to an hour happily browsing. This time was…different.

Hordes of kids running around (and being frightened of the giant Hulk statue in the middle of the store). Hard to get to what I was looking for, and I was always scared of bumping into and knocking over children too short to see. But what the hey; it was good to see all the kids excited about reading, and their parents supporting them in that endeavour.

I really can’t complain. I found what I wanted, and bought it. No, I didn’t take the free comics. The kids were obviously having fun, so I figured it was better to let whatever free comics would go to me, to go to the kids. It was an experience, but I think I’ll plan better next time.

Brought my nine-year-old girl and told everyone to call her ‘Hit Girl’. Got to hand with some comic writers and artists I know. I was good.

I made the rounds to my local comic shop - Missed Tick #1, but picked up everything else I wanted from the freebies. The place was packed! And the owner even brought in a local artist - who’s done some published work for minor things - to do sketches.
