Tried a couple I found on google, but unfortunately they istalled a toolbar which had nothing to do with fan speed.
Also, I tried entering BIOS after re-start where I used to could see that info, but when I press tab, that black screen only appears for a split second, then it is gone.
SpeedFan is a pretty good tool, a bit unintuitive to use but it’ll get you the info you need. It can even generate temperature & fan speed logs in the background while you’re playing games and such.
I use SIW (available at www.gtopala.com). Not only will it give you fan speed and temps, it’s invaluable as a resource to inventory virtually everything that’s going on in your PC. It’s free, doesn’t need an install, and very comprehensive.
gumpy, would you have a minute to walk me through this? I can’t seem to make it analyze. It just keeps poping up subsystems. I am going from hardware to CPU, and then it brings up subsystems, I click on OS and subsystem comes up again/
Also, there’s a previous post of mine where **Billy Bazonka ** gave me some very detailed information and one of the things he told me was to type in “memory” in the start section. This brings up memory diagnostics, but it only shows problems and there’s just one after the restart (nothing regarding fan speed/memory though) and to see the details it wants me to choose “SAFE” mode, which I really don’t want to do. I just want the BIOS screen to come up and stay up.
There’s no analysis. It’s just a reporting tool. Once it’s running, you’ll see a list of expandable items on the left. One of those is “Hardware”. Under the Hardware option, the sixth item down is “Sensors” which has what you’re looking for. I’ll PM you my email.
Speccy is free. Look closer. If you want priority support you pay for support. If you want the application you download it using the free link under the bigger support download link.
You’re correct. I went to a different site this morning.
THIS time I googled it, and the whole site looked different. One thing though (and maybe I missed it in the data I looked at just now), where does one find fan speed?
From what I remember, fan speed is rarely included in such monitor programs. Because it’s not important. The CPU temp is the critical item.
Fans vary so much in size, shape, & location that the fan speed isn’t a reliable indicator of much. For example, a big fan spinning slowly can move just as much air as a small fan spinning much faster. (But the bigger fan is quieter, though usually costs more than the small, noisier fan. And there may be less places in the case to locate a big fan. Each manufacturer chooses fans for the CPU & case that are appropriate and within their manufacturing budget.)
But the specific speed of fans isn’t standardized for particular temperatures. If the CPU is too hot, speed up the fan; if cool enough, slow down the fan.
