Free Internet Providers

IP one being goofy, IP two connects and the mail on IP one works.

Can anyone reccomend any free internet providers? DO they like Win 98 internet sharing?

Thanks

oookay . . .

netzero, according to their commercials

juno, from what I have heard, though I may be wrong.

on this note:

http://www.broadpoint.com is free long-distance phone calls. go there and see for yourself. I ain’t lying.

I use netzero because I’m used to it, but its most recent version has some really obnoxious features. Altavista is less annoying, but less familiar to me.

whatever you do, you can try them and switch them up. It’s good to have several available to you when one is down. Unlike paid ISPs they do not earn money by customer service. If the server is down, it may be down for a while. Not a long while, but still. Get a few different ones. Play with them. It’s free after all.

IMHO with a free ISP you get what you pay for. I’ve worked for a local ISP for several years (helped start it up, actually) and if you have a local ISP, I’d recommend that over one of the free ones.

Local ISP’s generally have excellent tech support, less downtime, and lower prices than the national providers.

If you can stand the ads, I’ve heard that netzero is not too bad.

The one you get is the one that has a local dialup number. Now, there is no way we can tell you about that is there???

Juno is nice.

freewwweb is nice.

Netzero is very very slow & bulky but works.

If you want no floating ads, Freewwweb.com or Worldspy.com are much better.

Do a search on “freewwweb”, and you’ll find the other experiences people have. Lots of threads around here.

I have been using Netzero for over a year. My job requires frequent travel and have been able to access local numbers everywhere but Monroeville Pa. All of the calls were a toll call to Pittsburgh. I think it may have been a local telephone thing, as I was not far from Pittsburgh. I am thinking of getting a second service - one for home and one for my notebook, as I have not been able to figure out how to set up separate accounts that can be accessed from multiple computers. That way my honey and I can converse via e-mail as well as the phone.

Fleetwood,
Are you saying that you had to make toll calls from only one location and it work with local calls everywhere else?
Different accounts are easy, just create a dial up for each. The problem is getting them to forward each other’s email, and you can use hotmail for that.

I don’t know about the other freebies, but if this means anything to you, I use Juno, and am satisfied enough with it that I haven’t bothered to try any of the others. Not that it’s perfect…far from…but I’m too lazy to check out the others, and it seems to work well enough.

Sorry it took so long carnivorousplant, but I was called away after my post yesterday.
I have been able to get to a local non toll number from many localities in the US, but the numbers Netzero gave me for western Pa were all toll calls from my location. I was in a hotel and they like to jack the rate up even higher than the phone companies. My boss would authorize the charges if it were business related, but he probably would not count the SDMB as one. And thanks for the suggestion, i will try that.

I’ve been using freewwweb for about a month now and have had a pretty good experience so far. There are no ad banners and I can almost always get on–I occasionally get a busy signal, but not very often. It’s strictly dial-up, you don’t have to have special software for it.

I tried freei, but it does have banners that are kind of annoying, taking up about the top inch of my screen. Plus, the freei software crashed sometimes on my computer.
