Today on GOG:

Saints Row (2022) is the Epic freebie this month.

Playing the long game worked out for me here: Didn’t buy when it launched because nuts to Epic’s exclusivity deals, didn’t buy from Steam a year later because the game wasn’t well received and now it’s free.

Saints Row is pretty fun (honestly…I forget which one I played…maybe it was 2 or 3 but it was fun). I would think #1 was good too that they made more.

This is a reboot of the series. I don’t think No. 1 was ever ported to PC, 2 had a buggy PC port that requires a fan patch, 3 is the best (my opinion) and 4 sort of hopped the rails into a superhero/aliens game which is likely why they started over 2022. That’s ignoring the side game about conquering Hell

The 2022 reboot wasn’t well received. A number of people complained about it being toned down (or “woke”, depending on your person) and losing much of the original’s style. But even game outlets with progressive staff and writers game it mediocre reviews about the world being pretty boring, repetitive side missions, flat or unlikable characters, etc. So it wasn’t all just people demanding their sexism and dildo bats. The studio (Volition) was closed down not long after launch.

All that said, I was still curious to try it but told myself not until it was $5 or less. Was almost tempted by the $8-$10 prices going around but now, for free, it’s worth an install if only to complain to friends on Discord about it.

SR1 2022 was on my wishlist to buy. Ok, so I was possibly going to remove it from my wishlist having passed up the all the previous discounting on it, but I go to see what the last scraps from the epic sale ending tomorrow has, and I get a freebie!

Yes, SR1 (original) never made it to the PC. I played SR2 and 3 (and 4). I don’t think I had to patch SR2 on the PC as far as I remember, and would be interested to know what was wrong. SR3 I remember sort of got to a point where it kind of looped around providing the same missions over and over, and I don’t know if I finished that and it was just the post endgame. SR4, I started playing, and I can’t even remember if I played it all, but I do remember it being just a step too far. I did consider going back to it, and probably will now before the SR1 Reboot.

From PCGamingWiki:

The development of a free patch, handled by Volition, for the PC version was announced in October 2019. It was noted that this patch would bring performance improvements, bug fixes, improved draw distance, improved audio quality, various enhancements and all DLCs from the console version as well as restore online coop and multiplayer through Steamworks integration.[10][11] In February 2023, the patch remained unreleased, but still in development according to Volition.[12] After the closure of Volition in August 2023, the current state of the patch is unknown.

As of 2023, mods remain essential to fix multiple issues affecting the game, add new QoL features, as well as improve compatibility with modern systems. The GOG.com version has a 30 FPS frame rate cap to fix various animation and cutscene issues, though this can be removed.

(I said “patch” when I was really meaning mods, in particular the Gentlemen of Saints Row fan mod that fixes a ton of performance issues)

I suspect I played it on windows 7 (maybe even XP) closer to the time, so didn’t need such patches as would be needed nowadays… That was it. I was just wondering if perhaps it was 2 or 3, because I felt as if there was something blocking the end of SR3, I don’t remember really finishing it.

3 was a damn masterpiece. I played the crap out of it. It’s one of my favorite games of all time. My wife even enjoyed watching me play it (on the Xbox).

Back to free stuff, yet still on Saints Row, there’s five free cosmetic DLC available from the store page as well. Also some paid DLC that probably isn’t worth it.
