Give a man a free game and he plays for a day. Give him a free RPG Maker (until Feb 19th) and he has games for a lifetime! Of course, he made them all so they’ll probably be kind of boring to play so maybe find a friend to make games for you.
Does that mean we could make them for each other here on the dope?
Not sure if you’re serious or riffing off my comment, but the games are exportable and playable independent of the RPG Maker. There’s actually a ton of “RPG Maker” games on Steam (basically most of the low rent $3.99 style JRPG games are from RPG Maker)
There’s also some very good ones on Steam. To The Moon, for example, was made using RPG Maker XP.
Looking now, RPG Maker XP is free as part of RPG Maker Fest on Steam, so you can see other games made with the engine and get some inspiration if you so desire.
There’s something about the name “Ultimate Zombie Defense 2” that really rubs me the wrong way. They just should have renamed the first game “Penultimate Zombie Defense.”
A wealth of freebies from Steam this week. Don’t like the name of Ultimate Zombie Defense 2? Then take your frustration out on the zombies in Dead Island: Riptide Definitive Edition instead. That’ll learn 'em. I don’t see a “Free Until” date (maybe because I already have it in library?)
I used to think the same about “The Ultimate Warrior” back in the WWF days. Like, okay folks, here’s the last wrestler.
Driftland: The Magic Revival is free on Fanatical (activate via Steam). I don’t know much about the game but I do know about Fanatical. First, don’t trust that 6 Days remaining on the counter because supplies will be limited and secondly, they’re gonna want you to subscribe to their newsletter so let that inform your call.
I thought it looked nice and went to add it and I already had it in Steam.
I’m fairly sure it’s been free before
Yeah I guarantee it because I wouldn’t have paid for it.
I’m actually surprised it hasn’t been listed in this thread before. I also owned it before this offer (and sure didn’t buy it)
I don’t know why but I often miss Steam free giveaways. I never see Steam advertising them prominently like Epic and Amazon do. Maybe I have just missed it all these years. If not for this thread I’d not have seen this one. (Also, Steam freebies don’t seem nearly as good as what Amazon or Epic provide.)
The difference is that Valve isn’t doing the promotions. When Epic has their weekly free games, it’s Epic striking a deal with a publisher and paying them for the game in order to encourage people to make an account on Epic and visit the site.
When a game is free on Steam, it’s almost always because a publisher decided to give it away as a promotion (for instance, free Ultimate Zombie Defense to promote the new UZD 2). Valve doesn’t give them front page space on Steam because Valve doesn’t have anything really to do with it. Valve also doesn’t pay them for it, it’s the developer deciding that the title doesn’t sell much anymore so the promotion of their new game is worth more than the value of however many free copies are taken of the old game.
I get notifications for GOG giveaways, but that’s because you need to subscribe to their newsletter to be eligible for them, and the newsletter is how they tell you that there’s a free game.
Though I still usually get the notification in email after I see it here. Folks here are fast.
Very much enjoying the Steam integration on Discourse. I literally added this one without even opening the Steam site.
Yeah, it’s ridiculous. One click and you have it in your library.
Let’s add another happy +1 for Discourse then!
Yeah, me too. It’s easy to add stuff, you get some idea of what the game is and there’s no surprise/confusion once it’s off sale since you see right in the thread if it’s still free or not.
FlatOut is free today on GOG. I’m sure a newletter sign-up is required. It’s a game from 2005 but that just means it’ll run on virtually anything and crashing cars never goes out of style.
