I hadn’t considered that. I & friends usually go to the front page or with other services like GOG get the mailer and read those.

I have to say, I’ve not bought more than as couple of games on epic, but I open the launcher and navigate to the free game section to claim them, so I do see their store front
Not me. I’m pretty much never already logged in, so I have to go through the whole login process before I can claim the free game. Pretty sure I end up with a front page impression during that process.
Quoted from Epic Games:
The Epic Games Store now offers over 2900 titles
That seemed really low to me so I googled how many titles Steam has. Google says 101,035, plus another 80k or so “add-ons” like mods and soundtracks.
I’ll note that it has been free on Game Pass on Xbox for a while now. It wasn’t at first, but as others said both sales and reviews have been lackluster.
I never even bothered to try it on Game Pass. I might grab it through Epic since unlike Game Pass, it’s free forever if you claim it.
Of course, the fact that you’re not certain about it doesn’t say much for how successful the free games are at making you browse the front page and potentially make a purchase
Distant Space is free to keep on Steam until noon CST on the 24th. Old budget game but has decent ratings.
Weird looking arcade style side-scroller “Weapon of Choice” is free until Sept 22.
Seems weird that Epic lists it as a $60 game. I hear only mediocre reviews of it and it is two years old.
But hey…for free I’ll give it a shot.
It might be mediocre but $60 is the base price on Steam as well. It’s on a 70% off sale right now to hook in the uniformed suckers
i bought it the sequel and another game they made for 1.87
Today on GOG:
That’s an oldie but a goodie. I’ve sunk many hours into it.
Definitely agree, a great game to pick up. I love the humor in the Tropico games too.
Wow, I might actually attempt to download something from GOG, never tried that franchise before but it did intrigue me (and I forgot about it). Do I need to download their client to play it?
All games you get from GOG can be played without using the client. Although, you need the client to download the game.
Do you? You certainly can use the Galaxy client, but you never used to need it.
I’m not 100% sure but GOG needs to know it is you and that you have properly purchased the game. Seems to me you need to use the client for that. Maybe you could do it via their website (I’ve never tried). But, once downloaded, you can run any game from GOG without the client if you want to. Not sure why you would feel the need to do it that way but you can.
I’m fairly certain you can download it from a link on the website, once you’re logged into it, but I haven’t got a while.
As for why - it’s so you can keep a downloaded installer for the game archived for if the game gets removed.
ALL GOG games can be run without the client. They also ALL have no DRM. You can use the client to download a game but once installed you can run it without the client (and I think with no need for an internet connection to run but not 100% sure on that one).
It’s a selling point for GOG that they do it this way.
