Free PC game and free weekend notification thread

It seems clear that Beyond Blue is in a Subnautica type game from the trailer. Has anyone played it? I’m wondering how much it’s like Subnautica, because that might drag me out of my Balatro fog (of stupid challenges) and my stalled BG3 attempts.

Well that question certainly got my attention. But looking at the videos on steam and the user reviews, it’s not really a game. It’s more of a four-hour educational walking simulator. No base building or crafting of any kind as far as I can tell.

That said, it looks gorgeous. If it were $10 I would probably pick it up just for the underwater experience.

I have no idea, but it’s weird because when I clicked on the link it was already in my library. It was clearly given away already in the past. I have never played it though.

It claims to be a “single-player narrative adventure”, which involves “tracking sea creatures, unraveling mysteries, and interacting with the ocean”. All of which could be accomplished by swimming around and clicking on prompts, I guess, without anything that you’d consider gameplay.

The people who made “Never Alone” (a pretty decent game, I played it all the way through a few years ago) were involved in this, but they partnered with the people who made Blue Planet II (a BBC documentary about the oceans) and OceanX Media (a nonprofit that makes ocean videos).

I see it described as “relaxing” and “beautiful” by reviewers, though the gameplay is shallow and it doesn’t take long to get through the content. I also see it called a “diving simulator”. So it probably is one of those games that is just about exploration.

Yes, this. Reviews aren’t awful though, so it must be a heck of a walking simulator.

Epic’s freebies for this week:

F1 Manager 2024

Apex Legends: Loba Free Unlock Bundle (Note - this is an add-on for Apex Legends)

Today on Epic:

Garden Story

World War Z: Aftermath
(I had a message come up saying “This edition contains content I already have, buy anyway?” Clicked on Buy, and it went through as free. I likely had some previous World War Z free offer I’ve long since forgotten about  )

Golden Light is currently free on Steam. It’s a self-described “Survival-Horror FPS Prop Hunt Roguelike about meat”. You’re on your own from there.

I’ve heard Golden Light is a, “unique experience.” I’m in.

Golden Light looks like some guys high on drugs made some weird late night shit live in a public access studio before anyone could stop them. Then it became a video game.

Of course I added it to my Steam library.

A few free games on Steam right now (I am not sure for how long). I cannot say if any of these are any good (some look good):

New batch of games on Amazon Prime Gaming.

Talos Principle Gold Edition
BioShock Infinite Complete Edition
Wolfenstein: Youngblood (PC, XBOX)
Hardspace: Shipbreaker
The Smurfs 2 - The Prisoner of the Green Stone
Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition
ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights
Lysfanga: The Time Shift Warrior
Eastern Exorcist
Colt Canyon
El Hijo - A Wild West Tale
Republic of Jungle
Royal Romances: Cursed Hearts - CE
Zombie Army 4: Dead War
Dark Sky
Stunt Kite Party
AK-xolotl: Together
Sands of Aura
Surf World Series
Blood West
Super Meat Boy Forever
GRIP
To The Rescue!
Star Stuff
Spitlings
Elite Dangerous

There are a few excellent games in there.

  • Talos Principle
  • BioShock Infinite
  • Wolfenstein: Youngblood
  • Hardspace: Shipbreaker
  • Deus Ex

Maybe some others but those really stand out (and, of course, assuming you like whatever genre each of those are in).

Ender Lilies is a good game in the 2hard4u Metroidvania category
Zombie Army 4 is a well regarded Left4Dead-esque squad shooter by the Sniper Elite people.

It finally happened.

The other day, I thought about Bioshock Infinite, a game I had never played. I figured maybe I should look. It was on sale for $3. You know what? I bought it.

Having reviewed the list of free games from Amazon…I found the game and then realized…

I had claimed the free copy of Bioshock Infinite two weeks ago and forgotten. Two weeks only!

Had I bought it through Steam directly, I’d request a refund(zero hours played). Nope, bought it 3rd part for a Steam code and I think they offer no refunds.

Lost $3.

It’s a very good game. Worth $3 I think. $0.00 would be better but I would not feel bad about spending $3 on it.

It’s more than I already had it free when I paid the $3. I finally reached a point of buying a game I own due to not knowing what I have.

How hard is it on easy, I wonder?

Not hard at all. I think I finished it on its most difficult play, bit of effort but not impossible.

It really is a stellar game though, and worth a spare loss of $3. Worth the $40 I paid for it. Story is a bit nonsensical but delivered in style and Elizabeth is certainly the most enchanting combat companion.

Isn’t it ironic?

She’s a great companion. Not least that she was a first (or near enough at that time) companion who you did not have to worry about at all. You just did your thing and she’d help out here and there. Very nice from the usual babysitting you used to do with companions.
