Free PC game and free weekend notification thread

Oh wow, great week for me, both of those were on my wishlist and I might actually play them which I think has been true of like 2 or 3 of the 300 free games I’ve redeemed on epic.

Edit: Apparently Rogue Waters was in last month’s humble choice. Because I still subscribe to humble choice despite only playing a tiny fraction of those, too. Because I feel compelled to collect video games without playing them apparently. I don’t think I’ve even redeemed my humble choice games in the last 6 months. probably a pretty solid sign to cancel that subscription

Just in time for Father’s Day comes Remothered: Tormented Fathers, one of those horror/survival games where you sneak around a creepy place getting stalked by a Big Bad Thing and all you can do is hide in closets and under beds while trying to solve the horror mystery. Only free until tomorrow (6/8) at 1:45 CST which is kinda weird itself. Also, I guess this is technically a “Chapter One of Three” type game.

You can pause it monthly (though you have to remember to do it monthly as they’ll restart you each month) and save that month’s “token” for the games. I’ve been milking an annual sub since December 2003 since each month I’m “Ehhh… nah” and pause for the month. Still have four “months” left.

Ah, good call. I may do that. I’m not knocking humble choice – it’s usually worth the $15 a month for the games you get – I just don’t play that many games anymore, so it’s a bit silly that I still have things like a gamepass subscription and humble choice subscription if I’m not using them anymore. But then again it’s probably pretty normal, I bet a ton of people have a hulu or netflix subscription they don’t bother to use for months at a time.

Though shockingly gamepass actually came down in price from $16 to $13 recently, which was unexpected. These things almost never move in that direction. Humble choice went from $12 to $15, but it’s been $12 since like 2016 so I can hardly blame them. The increase is probably well below inflation.

It was a dramatic increase before and I think they had raised it too much, and were losing subscriptions. So they scaled back; still an increase from before, but not as dramatic.

That’s true, but I always thought gamepass was probably underpriced from the start as a subsidized market share building strategy. So I expected it to gradually increase to $20+

Game Pass Ultimate costs $23 a month already. It was at $30 a month for a while. It was previously at $20 a month.

Fair enough. I should have specified that I meant PC game pass. Which was five for a couple years which was the sort of false subsidy market share grab. And then 10 for a long time. And I thought that were probably underpriced. They have significant number of games I could serve as a entire game library for most people. For less than the price of something like netflix.

Horror restaurant sim Happy’s Humble Burger Farm is free until June 15.

If you’re not into murder-burgers, we also have The Red Lantern which is free until the 18th. Find your way home with a dog sled & sled dogs. Without the second part, it’s just a sled.

Epic’s freebies for this week:

The Ouroboros King

Warhammer 40,000 : Speed Freeks

Discourse will probably yell at me for over posting but it’s my duty to meet you all know that strategy-puzzler Eets is free until the 15th. Do your worst, Discourse.

Mediocre rated MMORPG Wild Terra is free again until the 15th. It was previously free in early December but maybe you were sleeping that week.

Surprisingly great week on epic

Citizen Sleeper and Robobeat, both rated 93% and 94% thumbs up on steam (yes, I go right to steam to see what epic giveaways are all about)

Citizen Sleeper is a unique game trying to simulate the depth of a TTRPG experience that looks fairly unique and Robobeat is one of the niche but surprisingly full genre of shooter / music game hybrids designed around moving and shooting on the beat, which I really like and had this game on my wishlist. I think it’s going to be one of those 1.5% of epic giveaways I actually play.

I played Citizen Sleeper (and its sequel) on Game Pass a while back (and completed both). Interesting story and dice-based gameplay, but kind of short. What nice is that it’s turn-based so you can stop it at any time and pick up later.
