Free PC game and free weekend notification thread

A couple free rabbit-related games right before Memorial Day, as one does. One looks like a Fall Guys clone, the other… I dunno. I’m also not sure if these both being free is coincidence or what since they seem to have different dev/publishers. It’s a crazy world out there.

Arcade car racer Drift86 is free until June 3rd. Get in your favorite car, assuming it’s this car or maybe one of the paid DLC cars. This car is free though so it’s my favorite.

Epic’s freebies for this week:

Calico

Lonestar

And here I just got Forza Horizon 6. I suspect the timing of this freebie is not a coincidence.

I just saw this game on sale for $45 or so. Worth it?

IF you like racing games then absolutely. Best of the lot yet (some may quibble but I have seen no one who would really push back at that opinion).

Of course, 100% car racing so if that is not something you like, then no. Otherwise, I would say without doubt the best there is.

ETA: Forza Horizon 6 is NOT a sim! If you are the person who wants a really detailed simulation of car handling that you can tweak in a million ways then this is not that. Forza is more an arcade-style driving thing.

Yeah, I’ve played Forza games before and this is fact. I do like games like this… My favorite racing game of all time is Burnout 3: Takedown, which is an absolutely ridiculous game focused more on crashing into other cars and making them wipe out more than actually racing. It was stupid and fun. Forza games aren’t nearly that ridiculous, but they still prioritize action and fun over realism.

Why Burnout 3 was so dumb but fun

In Burnout 3, my favorite mode is just called “Crash”, where you have to crash a vehicle into a busy intersection and cause the most monetary damage that you can. I loved sending a firetruck in and watching cars flip around and explode. So dumb and so fun. I miss those stupid games from decades ago.

I haven’t played a Forza game in a while, and I remember it was pretty hard to master the driving, so much that I gave up. But it looked pretty and seemed fun enough if you had the patience. I think the last one I tried was Forza Horizon 5.

For those who like a car racing simulator (where you can tweak every dang thing) I would recommend Assetto Corsa. It’s old(ish) at 10 years but it is a vibrant community. This is one that shines from the modding community surrounding it.

Yeah…Forza Horizon 6 has no chases or intentional crashing or anything like that. It’s racing-lite. While you cannot tweak minutiae of your car you have a LOT of cars to choose from. Also, different racing types. You can even drive around and explore (no racing) and that can result in “barn finds” that lets you unlock new cars.

It looks great, plays great. If you like racing/driving games I think Forza is hard to beat but I know this is a niche thing so YMMV.

You can fiddle with various bits to change the handling and acceleration and stuff

Stop talking about AAA car games! There’s DDD nonsense games to claim!

IQ Under Construction is an obstacle course/Fall Guys looking game with some fairly scathing reviews (until June 1). Moonrise Falls is a puzzle/exploration game with overall positive reviews (until June 2). I try to provide a little something for everyone: People who like good games and people who like terrible games. Actually, I just post without judgment.

Gravity Circuit is free until June 14th, a classic ole platforming action title like from the years of yore. Also Overwhelmingly Positive with over 2000 ratings! So, if you like this sort of title, here’s a good one to grab.

The game looks like Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden had an awesome baby.

Story-adventure Tell Me Why is free (all three episodes) until July 1st. It’s been free during June for LGBT Pride month for a few years now so it’s likely most of you already have it but it’s available once again for anyone who doesn’t

Winxexy is free until the 5th. Looks like a rolling ball puzzle game. Back in my day, we played Marble Madness but I guess today you play Winexy.

Task Bar Hero is currently free on Steam. I am not sure what to make of this game…not even sure how you play it. But it’s free:

Reviews are pretty bad, and complain about weird data collection and features being taken away by developers. The game has also apparently been taken over by bots, as it’s an online game with a marketplace, and the developers aren’t doing anything to fight them.

WWI combat seems doable in a Total War-style game, but it seems like it would be difficult to make it fun. Every battle would be just having your infantry sit in trenches until the battle timer runs out while you both try to clobber each other with off-screen artillery.

That’s basically how I played sieges in Rome 2 - roll up with a few dozen onagers, sit outside the walls, and rain fire on the enemy basically unopposed until they rout.

Epic this week:

Rogue Waters, Pirate-themed turn-based strategy rogue-lite.

Songs of Conquest, Fantasy-themed turn-based strategy
