Launchers drive me crazy. Launchers launching launchers is a line too far, IMO.

There have been several free or low-cost games that have been found to be crypto miners, but as far as I am aware no major game launcher has been caught doing it.
Sometimes launchers are required to run a game because they run services that the game needs to function. uplay, for instance, handles friends lists, achievements, matchmaking, etc. Without that, the game wouldn’t be fully functional. Could they change their design so the game has all of that internally? Yes, but then you wouldn’t get some of the functionality across games.
Most required launchers launch quietly in the background, I know uplay does this. Of course it’s not a crypto-miner, not only would that be trivially easy to detect but you’re not going to get that from a big company like ubisoft. Maybe some very small sketchy early access games or something.

I got a free 30 days from them I kind of didn’t want because I was trying to order something and clicked the wrong thing too quickly. Still, the games make up for it. I also tried redeeming a Candy Crush Soda in-game thing because I used to play it on the go pre-pandemic, and they sneaked in a £5.99 charge somewhere in the 100 odd flashing things they put up as I logged in again for the first time in years. So watch out for redeeming against King apps. I got google play to refund it, and will uninstall that app now…

Not so far, I’ve found https://www.videogameschronicle.com/ to be a decent source of such leaks, and it seems to sometimes have them a few hours early, the whole list is not so far.
The full list was leaked on or after christmas last year I think (we were in Vegas so otherwise involved to remember).
