I’m working on a newsletter, and need to re-size some photographs. With the holidays coming up, I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on photo-editing software with all sorts of capbilities when all I need to do is re-size the pictures to fit. So I turn to the SDMB - any recommendations for free photo-editing software? Anything I should avoid?

IrFanview works for me. You can re-size one or several photos at once. And it’s free, as requested.
Photo filtre is a terrific little program - it can easily resize, adjust color and it has a number of artistic filters for additional effects.
I believe (though I have never used it) that Gimp is not only free but a pretty good knockoff of photoshop.
Why sacrifice what you want or run the risk of downloading malware etc.
Trying using things like bittorrent to download pirated software.
They normally come with a crack code to help you get the CD up and running and have all the very latest versions.

I also second the recommendation. It’s an excellent freeware image viewer/utility capable of cropping, re-sizing, converting formats, etc.
This is hysterical. File-trading networks, bittorrent inlcuded, are the primary distribution channels for malware and viruses. Obvious troll, good job on the banning.
I am not familiar with the products mentioned here but Google’s Picasa fits the bill. Available from Google’s web site.
I usually come into these threads to recommend Picasa, but I see I was beaten to it. 
Thirding Irfanview, it also lets you mass convert, and you can custom resize images as well. It’s very user friendly, and free.
