Freezing avocados. Do you have to open them first?

What’s the best way of freezing avocados? Most of the advice I’ve seen says they’re best frozen by cutting them open first, putting the inside in a freezer bag with the air removed, and then placed in the freezer. Would they still taste good if you just stick the whole fruit as is in the freezer? I figure since they’re mostly fat they’re shouldn’t be much of a problem with ice crystal formation. What are your suggestions?

IMO they don’t freeze well at all. Well maybe if you’re going to blend then up with something else in a smoothie they are passable, but if you want avocado to be the main flavor, you’re going to be disappointed.

Mrs. L picked up a bag of frozen at Trader Joe’s. IIRC they were already cut up and she wasn’t a fan.
