Fresh Whole Rabbit

Some of the reviews for this Amazon product strike me as being less than sincere.

Which is a shame, because Bricker Jr. has recently decided to embrace his inner carnivore and has expressed a desire to try different kinds of meat. Inasmuch as I’m not allowed to hunt rabbit in my Northern Virginia suburb, I thought this might be a good way to get the flavor without the work.

Anyone have any suggestions for other exotic meat sources?

Around here (Chicago), you can go to a live poultry butcher and they will often have rabbit. I don’t know what it’s like where you live. I suspect its availability is going to depend on what ethnic groups you have in the area and whether rabbit is part of their culinary tradition.

No, but thanks for the link!

I don’t hunt, but we’ve recently enjoyed venison, pheasant, and rabbit. I know a couple of guys that hunt and I’m on record as being happy to get meat. We just finished off 35 pounds of wrapped venison that a buddy gave me when I helped him move.

Know any hunters? Put the word out that you’ll draw up wills in exchange for game!

Why is rabbit so absurdly expensive? I would figure it would be cheap and plentiful considering that they breed like, well you know.

Would mail order work?

(You might find a similar store nearby, there used to be one just down the road from me.)

When my brother was doing Atkins and getting bored with everyday meats, I found him some kangaroo ribs at one such exotic meat website. It arrived just fine (although he said it wasn’t very tasty).

I was at a state fair one time where the woman in the “Rabbits” booth was asking each customer, “Pets or meat?” They do kind of straddle an uncomfortable line in our culture. Uncomfortable for them in particular, I guess.

It’s getting near fair season. Might be able to get a fat bunny off some 4-H kid.

Pigeons are supposed to be pretty easy to grow and are non-standard here.

Wow, I wasn’t aware you could buy food on Amazon.

Lot of Peruvian and Ecuadorian immigrants in the DC area. Could probably hunt down some cuy (guinea pig) without too much effort.

You can search for exotic meats on Yelp. DC has a number of entries from butchers to restaurants that carry all kinds of meat.

It usually isn’t cheaper than the grocery store, except for when it is. I order my tahini from Amazon.

Aww, Bricker you’ll probably think my suggestion is unhelpful, but I think you should get a couple of .22 air rifles, head to unincorporated area, (farmers will often let you hunt on their land for a fee) make sure you have any applicable licenses, and teach Bricker Jr. to hunt some small game.

I’d do this sort of thing myself, but I was told I would get divorced for cooking squirrel. Yes, even if I cooked it outside.

I seem to recall that Dean & DeLuca has a D.C. branch (maybe their original). They can and will arrange for you to get anything you want. I suggest goose. They also have some Spanish wild pig prosciutto that is to die for, but only get a slice or two or you will go broke.

The health food store that my parents go to in Ohio has some odd meats. (I vaguely recall camel… and possibly beaver?)

I don’t know where you live exactly, but this place in McLean ought to fit the bill:

I don’t mind if my husband cooks squirrel, even inside. I won’t eat it (tried it, didn’t care for it), but if he wants squirrel stew, he can cook it.

I draw the line at butchering the squirrel in the living room, though. If he EVER butchers another animal inside the house, he won’t have to worry about a divorce. Because if there’s gonna be that much blood and guts and stink inside the house, then I’m gonna help make it. My OG, how butchering stinks!

Wow, I must be better trained. I never even considered cleaning them in the house.

Try Fresh Market, Whole Foods, or Earth Fare. They usually have an extensive meat counter.

Eastern market butchers sell rabbit and other fairly exotic meats. Other stuff can be ordered if you show up in person. So go to eastern market this weekend.
