Friday Night in the ER

Thursday, I had my third dose of chemo. After a few hours of resting and a good meal, I felt well enough to take a Bikram yoga class. It went well–I did all the poses, etc.(BTW, I don’t think the yoga class has anything to do with the following story…)
I was given a new drug…to strengthen my bones…I was told by my oncologist, Dr. R. that possibly I would have flu like symptoms.
Friday, afternoon, I was feeling feverish…no other symptoms…When I started on chemotherapy, I was told, I needed to call their office if my temp was over 100.5 and it was almost 102. I was also having chills.
So I called them ,expecting they would write it down, tell me to take tylenol, etc. The doc on call, (Dr. R. is on vacation.) told me I should probably go to the ER since it was the weekend and the office wasn’t open for a blood test (white count) and a chest x ray. (to see if I had pneumonia.)
So off I went…I ended up driving all the way across town to the ER that was less busy and would help me faster.
They took blood and urine. They wheeled me down for a chest x-ray. The doctor came back hours later, it seemed. She told me she had good news and bad. The blood test was fine…my white count was great. But the chest X ray looked suspicious. There may have been cancer in my lungs, or perhaps I had a blood clot (“Nothing can kill you faster.” she said) or maybe I have pneumonia. So I needed a CAT scan. I had a CAT scan a few weeks ago and, lung wise it was fine.
So I had the CAT scan. It was fine. My lungs were healthy. Because of the cancer, I have a rash on my chest. An x-ray sometimes can’t determine what’s on the skin and what’s inside the chest.
They gave me an antibiotic shot in the hip and I was able to hobble out of the quicker ER at about midnight. My temperature was normal by then.
This ER was deserted, but it still took hours for someone to read these tests.

Good luck. Sending healing vibes your way!

I hope chemo gets easier on you as you progress through it. Sounds like the first round ended up being not so easy after all :frowning:

Man. I’m sorry, Gail. I hope that doesn’t happen again.
