Friday Night Lights

Do yourself a favor and WATCH THIS SHOW!

I bought season 1 at Best Buy about two weeks ago and 22 episodes later, I’m convinced its one of the best shows on television. Its got everything, great acting, compelling story lines, great football action, emotionally charged scenes and characters you really grow to care about.

I had watched a couple episodes here and there and liked it, but I never really got into the show until I bought it. I can’t believe it took me this long, season 3 just started and I still have all of season 2 to watch. Thank god for hulu!

I know some of you have seen this show and you can back me up. But if you haven’t. please PLEASE watch this show, you will enjoy it and its in desperate need of ratings. With all the drek on television right now, one of the few good shows should not be in danger of being cancelled.

Season 3 is a marked improvement over season 2. It’s really really good and I highly recommend watching it. Some really solid plot lines.

Everybody needs to watch this show, it’s one of the best things on TV.

AND YOU DON"T HAVE TO LIKE FOOTBALL!!!

Quoted for truth.

drm, did you watch on DirecTV’s special channel? That was so nice, watching without commercials.

Here’s hoping we get a fourth season. The show can’t cost all that much to produce.

I love this show. I never would’ve even known it existed if a friend hadn’t recommended it to me.

I intensely dislike Jason Street and have never wanted to punch a guy in a wheelchair before. I was so happy that it looked like he’d been written out of season 3, until I watched episode 5 where he returned.

So angry. :frowning:

p.s. Coach’s wife is intensely hot.

I did! And it was tough being in Canada but luckily I have a friend who owns a bar and saw it there. Without commercials is very nice. I’m been recording them on my PVR now that they’re on NBC so I can hopefully convince my girlfriend to start watching.

I was listening to an ESPN podcast called The BS Report a week or so ago and he had Peter Berg (director of the movie and a producer of the show) and he says that Direct TV is very happy with how things are going so that’s a positive sign and since they are taking care of a portion of the financing, that’s good. Peter seemed to think that if they got similar ratings as last season on NBC they should be a go for a fourth…cross your fingers!

It is? I mean, I quit watching during season 2, when they just stopped trying to be good and became a standard teen soap with nary a mention of sports. Do they get back to their roots?

-everything I outline happens in the first few episodes so there’s no real spoilers-

Well, yes and no. There’s still the teen relationship stuff but it’s not as outlandish as season 2. There are some pretty solid football plot lines as well. One involves a new hot shot quarterback and his overbearing father (the mother is the pilot from northern exposure - which is pretty neat). The hot shot QB takes a few episodes to get going (in terms of his character, not football ability) but he turns into a pretty interesting guy. Matt Saracen really comes into his own as a character this year. He has to deal with some pretty stuff - but believable in his world - shit this year.

There is also a plot line from season 2 involving a murder which is all but ignored - and I’m glad quite frankly because I’m happy to forget that it happens altogether. Incidentally, the producers and writers hated that plot line as well and they tried to get it out of the way as soon as they could. I don’t know if it gives you any hope but it does me.

We also deal with Tim Riggins’ brother a little more this year and i generally enjoy this character. Also, coach’s wife becomes principal and has to deal with some pretty interesting problems (believable in the world in which they live). Tim’s pretty interesting this year…he gets some real depth.

Also, how Smash leaves the show is really pretty great. Those are some pretty solid episodes.

If you have any specific questions, I’d be happy to answer them, I don’t know if any of this seems interesting…but I sure love it and I definitely think it deserves a bigger audience than it has.

As an aside, Peter Berg has mentioned that a lot of the young characters will be written off the show to make way for new characters to make this a little more believable than most teen dramas. I like that idea. He DID say that he’ll try to keep Tim Riggins around as girls tend to love that guy.

Yes. I wasn’t nuts about S2 either, especially the Tyra/Landry story line.

S3 isn’t soapy at all. There was only one short scene that made me roll my eyes and that involved Lyla when Riggins took her to church. She’s not one of my favorite characters anyway so I didn’t care.

Sorry to revive a (somewhat) dead thread, bit I am finally caught up. Season two kind of sucked, was it written during the writers strike? It had a few good moments, but way over the top sometimes. Season three is shaping up to be pretty solid. I’m on the NBC cable schedule so Jason Street coming back is news to me. I’m glad, I kind of like his character particularly when he was coaching in season 1.

I HATE Julie Taylor. She is by far the most annoying character on that show and I hope to god Saracen doesn’t get back together with her.

Anyways, I’ll say it again, solid show, go check it out. All episodes available on NBC.com

You won’t hate the S3 Julie. She’s another example of things that went wrong in S2. S1 Julie was (mostly) smart, perceptive, and level-headed. S2 Julie is suddenly a typical TV teen – hormonal, jealous of the baby, jealous of Tyra and playing head games with Matt.

Anyone watching for the first time could just skip S2 altogether, except for Eric and Tammy – those characters went through some big changes and came out with an even stronger relationship. They’re the best married couple on TV, I think.

The funny thing is that the season 1 Julie was completely unrealistic, compared to the much more lifelike teen angst from season 2.

I far prefer the unrealistic level-headed teens that only seem to exist in tv land. I just found it funny that your description of “typical tv teens” is far closer to real life teens.

Matt Saracen? Puh-lease. Most unrealistic character on television, but also one of my absolute favorites. Jesus Christ himself would pale by comparison to his pure sainthood.

Lila, with her trial run of religious fervor in season 2, that seemed like real teen stuff to me. Reminded me of my teen excursions to…some kind of Catholic two-day overnight retreat thingy. WTF was that called? Started with an “A” I think. While I always leaned toward atheist, spending the night with cute chicks was a winner in my book, and I could see how easily many teens get swept up in that stuff.

Actually, I forgot about the baby this season. Have we seen her yet?

I don’t remember seeing much of the baby in S3. Maybe not at all.

Ellis Dee, about Julie – I thought S1 Julie was the writers’ version of what a teen would be like if her parents were Eric and Tammy. I think level-headed thoughtful parents with lots of patience can raise a non-angsty teen. But you’re right, the hormones can’t be denied, and S2 Julie was probably more realistic. It was such a surprise, after S1. I kept wanting to smack her. “Your parents are Eric and Tammy! Why are you being such a little shit?” :stuck_out_tongue:
