Fringe 5/20/10

I thought it was an OK episode. I don’t know, I was hoping for more. More what, I’m not sure, but the whole thing went by too quickly for me.

William Bell dying wasn’t a surprise seeing as how from what I’ve heard Leonard Nimoy being luke warm about appearing on the show anyway. But having alt Oliva infiltrate the group. We just went through this with shape-shifter Charlie. I know having our Oliva on the other side gives the show a reason for another season (hey, that rhymed), but still.

I knew that Fake Olivia (may I submit Faux-livia for approval?) traded places as soon as she called William “Dr. Bell” but those last two scenes with the typewriter and then the prison gave me chills.

I like that William Bell used the term Walternate. As far as I know that is the first time it was used on the show.

I knew what would happen as soon as I saw both Olivias in the same frame and then alt Olivia (I’m guessing) told Bell to get down.

Like I said, I am disappointed about having another “infiltration” into the Fringe group, but hopefully maybe alt Olivia will learn for herself that this side’s Fringe team aren’t the monsters Walternate made them out to be. But she does seem a product of her world, which is somewhat militarized, so maybe she wont.

Walter’s been calling him that ever since Olivia found out Peter was from the other side.

No, Walter used it in a previous episode. I think one or two other people said it as well.

I think this one is a lot different from Charlie. Charlie was just a shapeshifter that looked like him. He wasn’t even really a person. Alt-Olivia is not that different from Olivia at all. And I bet she’ll be pretty affected when she meets her niece.

So that building at alternate Harvard is right next door to a disaster area full of amberfied people, but the power is still on?

Allowing Olivia and Peter one kiss before dumping in them in separate universes makes me wonder if this episode was secretly written by Joss Whedon.

My guess is that Olivia will be back sooner than you’d think. Fear heightens her power, right? Being in jail in the alternate world could conceivably drive her to a level of fear sufficient for a trip back. Or maybe she gets extra juice after being tortured or experimented on or something.

I’m wondering how alternate Olivia will be unmasked. It will probably have to do with zeppelins. She’ll let some stray comment slip about how her prom was held aboard the fanciest zeppelin in New York, and the jig will be up.

I’m wondering if our Olivia won’t somehow get back on her own too. Or hell, they’re not supposed to interfere but it wouldn’t surprise me if one of the Observers helped free her.

I wonder if the Observers are related to these Observers. :D. Nah, probably not.

Maybe. But Alt Olivia seemed colder than our Olivia.

Altivia doesn’t have the same relationship with Peter, doesn’t know about the kiss that helped convince Peter to come back, and certainly doesn;t have the relationship with Walter to pull it off.

These are things that can be picked up on quite quickly - and Peter mentioned that Olivia’s eyes were a bit darker - so, I can see her getting away with it on the first day or so (immediately after as it appears to be, with the confusion) - but not for long.

I really enjoyed last night’s episode, even though I agree that the Olivia switch was pretty well telegraphed.

I loved the little bits. I loved the first scene with Bell and Walter. Short dialogue, mixed with appropriate glares. (“Hello William.” “Hello Walter.” “You got old.” “Seems I’m not the only one.”) or words to that effect. I watched it a couple of times. Very nicely played by both Noble and Nimoy.

Also liked the comic books on Peter’s wall. “Red Lantern / Red Arrow.” What I assume is “Dark Superman.” Definitely put in by nerds for nerds. I appreciated that.

oh yeah - and the ring tone was “Science Fiction - Double Feature” - from Rocky Horror.

I hope next season we’ll find out that all the destruction in the alter-verse was NOT caused by Walter moving Peter. that plot point just bothers me.

The Olivia switcheroo was pretty obvious - but it could be very interesting how it plays out.

What really convinced Peter to come back? the kiss? the realization he was gonna be used as part of some evil weapon? the fact that the familiar Walter has become a nice guy while Walternate is pretty much eeevil? I hope they’ll have some complexity in his motivations next season.

I am glad there’s a next season. I like this show.

I’m wondering if Walternate’s experimenting is more responsible for the problems in the alter-verse. Clearly, something went badly wrong at his Harvard lab.

Here’s a question, that “quarantine” method, haven’t we seen that before? Back in early season one, there was an episode where some guy froze an entire bus in an Amber like substance. Was he from the other side?

Well, alt Oliva knows that there’s a thing between our Oliva and Peter so she might try and pretend to have feelings for him. But yeah, I don’t see the deception lasting long.

Probably a combination of all of those.

I was thinking there were simply two versions of the guy. One in our universe and the other in the alt universe.

Olivia went to pieces pretty quickly in the alt-universe padded cell. Are they using sensory deprivation on her? Does it work that fast? Because she’s a pretty tough cookie and has seen some really weird stuff. Putting her in dark room for a while seems pretty mild comparatively.

Yeah, I didn’t get that either.

Yeah. A few minutes in a dark room shouldn’t be so bad after she spent all that time in Walter’s water tank in the early episodes.

All the comics on Peter’s wall seemed to be DC. Did Marvel never recover from bankruptcy in the alt-verse?
