I still find it amazing that anyone can confidently predict anything about politics. To me it sounds the same as a gambler confidently predicting the next roulette result.
If AOC has a realistic shot in 2028, it would mean we were in the grips of the next great depression. So yeah, it’s possible.
In terms of offices held, do you think AOC’s status in Congress gives her a position for presidential nomination? I thought maybe she could run for governor first but the current governor is staying there. She could run for US senator but they’re firmly in place. I like her but can’t figure out which way she could go to get there.
There is no “regressive movement”. A Black/Asian woman got 48% of the vote. A whole lot of people agree with Trump’s efforts to marginalize minorities, but at least as many vehemently disagree.
This post seems to be playing into the hands of the Trumpist narrative that one narrow election victory constitutes a permanent political realignment and marks the final crushing defeat of liberalism. Don’t believe the hype.
I wouldn’t say Schumer is “firmly in place” after caving on the CR. Somebody is going to primary him from the Left, probably successfully. It could very well be AOC.
Let us compare this list to a centrist Democrat: Biden. Opposition to racism, no; sexist, no; homophobia, no; transphobia, possibly*; religious bigotry, no;
slavery, torture, dishonesty, corruption, no, no, no, no.
You could go through the same list with every centrist Dem of the last hundred years with much the same results. The last non-centrist Dem elected president was FDR.
*Transphobia seems to me opposition to transwomen in sports, not opposition to transsexuals as a whole. I have to admit that that question does bother me, although I admire the courage of transsexuals in general.
I will donate to their primary race even though it is not in the next cycle.
More seriously, I will donate to any Democrat who primaries Dick Durbin, one of my Senators. I called his office and told them just that. The fucker still voted for cloture and the CR.
Fuck that guy.
I’m with you. Both my senators did the right thing and voted no, and I’m ready to primary my congresswoman for other reasons, but as a loving Chigacophile I’ll toss some cash to anyone who goes after Durbin. Pritzker might be right for the job if he doesn’t have his eyes set on the White House in '28.
Or even Rahm. He’s an abrasive dick but that might be a good thing. And he has a better shot at that than running for POTUS.
And again, fuck Durbin.
After he went on Bill Maher and did the whole “If they’d had trans rights when I was in high school I would’ve said I was a girl so I could hang out in the girl’s locker room and watch them get naked” routine, I have zero respect for him anymore.
Also, it’s come to my attention that his brother is the CEO of the new parent company of WWE and UFC, who are both completely in bed with Trump, so that entire family can go fornicate itself with an iron stick.
Not yet anyway. Maybe in a decade.
And i will point out that the nation did vote for Harris as Veep.
Yes, that is a thorny question. Myself, I dont see the problem, but apparently some think there could be a problem. And i will admit that there are some weird-ass sport parents that could insist their son claim to be trans just to win. But I am not seeing any problem yet. I am not willing to call those who do see the problem (that I cant see) as transphobic. If that is their only caveat.
Of course a solution is to have all gender teams and sports. And then- that is a problem.
Harris’ branding is different from AOC’s. Harris was an AG for California, then a US Senator. AOC’s never even run for statewide office.
There is no one in the Democratic party who is positioned to be the kind of winner and transformational figure that voters seem to want, which is why the party polls so poorly. The current caucus of progressives will point their fingers at centrists and claim it’s because their leadership is as dead as doornails and need to get out of the way, but they’re not really an appealing brand either. That doesn’t mean that progressives can’t become an appealing brand, but they’re not now.
Two things about what you posted. First you have words in quotes that are not true. I have no great love for Rahm and have said he’s an arrogant dick. What he actually said on Maher was
Look, in 7th grade I know that if I could have said the word “they” and gotten in the girl’s bathroom, I would have done it.
I doubt there is a heterosexual male who would disagree with that thinking in 7th grade. It is a stupid, tasteless comment but I hope you realize Real Time is basically a comedy show, right? Plus the word “naked” isn’t used and it wasn’t something he wished for in high school. 7th grade is junior high. So you created a fake quote.
As for his brother Ari, you are totally misrepresenting a lot of things. He is not “in bed with Trump” and has been critical of Netanyahu AND anti-semitism.
I am well aware they both have reps for being obnoxious, arrogant pricks. But it isn’t necessary to make up shit about them.
Hardly a front runner. But maybe a guy to watch. Gift link.
Smapti’s paraphrase was accurate. Emanuel was clearly insinuating that if we acknowledge the existence of trans people, that will lead to heterosexual boys pretending to be trans in order to get into the girls’ bathroom, which is not a thing that happens in the real world.
I happen to know quite a few heterosexual seventh grade boys, and none of them have any interest in presenting as girls, because they identify as boys. I’m not sure why this is so hard for transphobes to figure out.
I’m not sure what you’re claiming about Ari; are you denying that he is the CEO of WWE/UFC, or that those organizations are promoting Trumpism? Or perhaps you are arguing that we shouldn’t judge someone just because they make a living pushing fascist propaganda?
And you’d be very hard-pressed to find anyone in the Democratic Party who wouldn’t agree that Netanyahu and anti-Semitism are both Bad Things, so I’m not sure why you’re presenting this as some brilliant revolutionary insight.
The quote was made up and is not “an accurate paraphrase”. Rahm made a dumb joke on a comedy show and the quote I included is word for word what he said.
Ari is not in fact CEO of UFC/WWE. That is someone named Dana White. Look it up. UFC/WWE are divisions of TKO Holdings. Ari is CEO of that holding company.
I have no interest in contributing to further hijacking of this thread arguing about the Emmanuel brothers. Rahm’s chances of getting the D nomination are slim to none in my opinion for a variety of reasons not least of which is his abrasive personality.
So you’re going to scurry off before I can ask you to explain what about that paraphrase was inaccurate? Or to explain why it’s OK to pander to transphobes as long as you do it on a “comedy show”? I can’t blame you.
Read the quote I included of the EXACT words Rahm used. Using quotes around words implies, at least to me, they are what was said. This is what Smarpt wrote:
If they’d had trans rights when I was in high school I would’ve said I was a girl so I could hang out in the girl’s locker room and watch them get naked
This is actually, word for word what Emmanuel said:
Look, in 7th grade I know that if I could have said the word “they” and gotten in the girl’s bathroom, I would have done it.
If you can’t see the difference then I can’t help you. I also haven’t defended what Rahm said so you can save yourself the snide insinuation that I did. I acknowledged what he said was dumb when I said it was a dumb joke.
Even if it’s just a joke, that’s something that shouldn’t really be joked about. I’d cut him some slack if he said it when he was a middle schooler, but he’s an adult and should know better than to joke about something like that. Not just because of the fallout, but because he shouldn’t be joking about topics which can be understandably hurtful to some people.
