Do you not know what “paraphrase” means? It means communicating the same message as the original quote, but using different words to express it. By definition, it isn’t a word for word quote. Smapti’s paraphrase uses ruder language to make clear what an awful thing to say it was, but it doesn’t in any way change the meaning.
And Smapti didn’t say “Rahm said “XYZ””, he said "Rahm did the whole “XYZ” routine. I don’t think in that context a reasonable reader would think Smapti is claiming that the part in quotes is a direct word-for-word quote.
I think the situation is possibly more dire for Dems this time around. In 2008 the two parties were not all that dissimilar and centrists controlled the party leadership and reliably brought factions into their respective tents. Times have changed. Republicans have successfully transformed their party into a new brand, whereas I think the Dems have a real identity crisis on their hands.
Yeah, he lost me forever with that combo. What a dumbfuck.
It reminded Dems everywhere that he’s a sleaze with Gordon Gekko hair. Maybe he can interview Gargoylefoyle and turn their reunion into a reality TV show. I hear she’s no longer with Jr.
It was a big deal. I remember being in a bar after it, talking to a Black person, and saying, “First Black president!” based on that speech. My point isn’t to give myself any credit for prescience. The speech made a big impact, and Obama was instantly a rising star.
I didn’t see the speech in a bar. I don’t remember exactly the context in which I became aware of it, but aware of it I became. The point of the “bar scene” is that a lot of people were already aware of Obama and the impact he’d had, you know? His charisma was instantly famous.
I gotta repeat what I think is obvious: none of this works without Trump alive and kicking. None of the fascist mojo transfers to anyone. Vance? LMFAO!!!
True, but a new identity is being established. Look at the Tesla Takedown. That’s us kicking ass. We’re not going to stop.
No one in the world thinks he was a good mayor of Chicago because he wasn’t. That’s enough for him never to get the nomination, but, as you say, he has no charisma and no appeal. To bring him up as a potential candidate is absurd. Case closed.
I think Trump, as long as he’s still alive, will be the most powerful man in American politics. If he throws his full support behind a successor, that person will instantly become the overwhelming favorite to win.
And then there’s Musk who is the second most powerful. He has the same cult-like following that Trump does and he wields tremendous power.
I think you live in a fairy tale if you think this is over in four years.
I don’t agree. The party polls poorly IMO because it is just a regular political party trying to do regular political and governance-type things, while the GOP has become a fascist insurgency offering dum-dum-style ACTION! for the rubes. It’s asymmetrical warfare.
They’re losing because they have a gerontocracy problem. I also think that much of the party was pretty clueless and blind the last four years, not really doing a good job of listening to the bottom half of income/wealth spectrum, pointing to the increased value of assets (stock market indices & real estate markets) as though that’s a great thing while shrugging off inflation as transitory. They thought the border wasn’t really a problem when in fact it was a huge one in the minds of working class voters.
