To express the right degree of disgust it would have to somehow involve smegma. “Smeghead” or “Cheese Dick”.
I can’t be entirely sure what the quid pro quo here is, but I definitely smell one:
Two world leaders … both trying to avoid prison … team up to bomb a third country that may or may not pose an imminent (“grave and gathering”) threat to us.
Somewhere, the Neocons are smiling – to the extent that they physically can.
And the administration is pushing this whole “obliterated” thing Sofa King hard that I tend to believe the “set them back a few months” version … for now.
ETA: just to point out the risible irony of this thread veering into “trying to explain ‘mutable vs. immutable’” to somebody as profoundly cognitively rigid as DemonTree…"
and filled with ghastly uncertainties. People who think they can keep it under control are liars or fools, maybe both.
When has launching a war to unify the nation and divert attention from domestic problems ever been successful? The Tsar picked a fight with Japan for that reason, the British cabinet rejoined at Germany’s invasion of Belgium to table the Irish question, LBJ thought an easy win in Vietnam would quiet RW objections to his social improvement projects.
The Franco-Prussian war
I thought of that, but IIRC Louis Napoleon was doing pretty good at home, and would be fondly remembered if he’d stayed out of Italy, Mexico, Indochina and Germany. His desire to be a major player on the world stage was its own driver and destruction
Bush II got reelected because of the Iraq war.
I meant for Bismarck and the Prussians, the war basically forged the German Empire.
It all came clashing down later but not because of that war specifically.
Got ya. Of course it didn’t work out too well for Bismarck himself: put together an empire that was inherited by a silly little boy who fired him for his trouble
Yeah but that was not because of the war, it was because hereditary monarchies are a stupid idea.
And before that, the US Intervention in Albania. God bless Sergeant William Schuman and the brave men of the 303!
You might even get to heaven with a soul like good ole Shoe.
I’ve never heard that. If anything anti-communism was virtually unanimous in US government circles at the time and the deteriorating situation in South Vietnam demanded the USA do something; Johnson might have faced criticism for not escalating US involvement. Johnson certainly must have hoped it would be an easy win because the federal budget was becoming increasingly strapped and an expensive war and space race threatened his Great Society hopes.
What has been the response to Israeli actions in Gaza?
Our orange leader has already proposed that we use ethnic cleaning to remove Gazans from the region. And Israel has nukes.
The man who destroyrd the last effort to get Iran to step away from making nukes is now, prompted by his own falling popularity, beating his chest and insisting that only his actions can save the world.
Apart from your post…
Glad to see you back! You are a poster I have missed. I hope to see more of you (your posts) and you stick around.
Thanks for the nod. Life has changed and I will probably not resume high activity. Having looked over a few Pit threads, I am really glad that I am no longer modding this herd of cats. Occasionally I will still pop in.
Remember the Maine!
Again, the issue had already been tamped-down by 1898. The election had been decided by bosses who’d bluffed their workers with “if Bryan wins, we’ll shut down the day after!” (Just like they said in 2012!)
And of course, our “Splendid Little War” turned into a Philippine bloodbath.
(BTW Tom: how’ve you been? How is Deb?)
Clemens’ Incident in the Philippines is one of the things that formed my political opinions.
