Story here. Harry Reid has shown his true colors. Congress finally had a jobs-creation bill with truely bipartisan support, that seemingly everyone liked, and what does Reid do? He cuts it down, eliminating everything that Republicans liked. Not only does Reid not want bipartisanship, he’s going out of his way to thwart it.
Mr. Reid, I hope the voters of Nevada take away your job in November.
I wonder what his calculus was. I’m sure he thinks he’s helping his re-election cause (and his son’s) by doing this.
My guess is that he didn’t want to piss off the lefties in his state by extending the estate tax break, that’s the piece of this bill that his side is most against.
Edit to add: was any of this bill paid for? It’s not mentioned in the OP’s link… or is it just another $85b or $15b thrown on the deficit pile?
The bill was a piece of crap with too many taxcuts for Republican interests, and not enough jobs.
Reid wisely decided that starting over so as to create a bill focused on JOBS was the best thing to do.
The man may finally have realized that as majority he doesn’t have to settle with Republican gimcrackery, he can simply set the agenda, and push it through. If true, that change will be good for the country.
If Republicans want to get on board anything besides not paying their fair share of taxes, they’re welcome to contribute to the new bill.
I agree. As it will increase the odds of winning for every Republican running in November.
 This “fair share” nonsense it peddled around here incessantly. Can you please tell me what you think this “fair share” is? Just how much more should the government go into the pocket of someone making $200,000 than someone making $40,000? How many more days out of a year should the person who makes more earn money have to work on the government’s behalf? And just how is that “fair”?
I’m happy to have the Dems run on trying to justify a 55% estate tax on estates worth as little as $1 million. Thrilled even.
Reid is an ass. But since he helping Blanche lose and will probably lose himself, an ass I’m happy to have front and center for the Dems. And this will also demonstrate the partisanship on the Dem side. Excellent.
There is no Estate tax on million dollar inheritances, but it would still be fine if there was. Inheritance is unearned income. It’s no different than taxing gambling wins.
I already did. I’d go with what Eisenhower had going. I don’t care what Kennedy did.
And where do you get that Kennedy was my “God?” I’ve never expressed anything close to that. I don’t think I’ve ever expressed an opinion about his Presidency at all, except maybe his handling of the Cuban Missile crisis.
Looks like the Republicans brought a knife to a gunfight. The Republicans lost in 2008 but they’ve refused to acknowledge that - they act like they’re still in charge and the Democrats have to come to them. They’re been refusing to work with the Democrats but now they’re suddenly shocked when they want something and the Democrats don’t need to work with them.
A 55% estate tax sounds like a fair share? Christ, only a liberal can think like that. Tax the rich dammit! They are winners in life’s lottery! They didn’t work for the money! Give it to the government instead, they will spend it wisely!
The Republicans once again show us that their mantra is “The ends justify the means.”
They stuff the bill full of crap they damn well know won’t be acceptable, and when their wish-list is rejected they whine, “See! The Dems lied when they said they wanted bipartisanship-Waaah!!”
New jobs lost?-They don’t care.
Dealing in bad faith?-Business as usual.
Sending the economy, and thus the country they live in, further down the toilet?-Who gives a flying fuck.
Total hypocrisy about suddenly wanting bipartisanship now that they are in minority status?-That’s the biz, sweetheart.
Ignoring their sworn duty and grabbing any opportunity to take power from the Democrats at any cost-Total Win!!!
