Fuck Kristi "Puppy Killer" Noem (descriptions of animal cruelty in OP)

It’s not always a dog. The Clintons had a cat, Socks. Jefferson had a pet mockingbird. And T. Roosevelt’s kids had guinea pigs, a macaw, rabbits, a badger, and at least one pony, Algonquin, who famously rode in the elevator when two of the boys brought him to their brother’s second floor room when he had measles and needed cheering.

The Trumps had no pets. Neither did Polk or Jackson.

Kassidy Noem turned 30 last week.

IANA hunter, but I’ve always thought that hunters using shotguns on deer, use slugs and not shot.

It can be slugs, but “buckshot” is called that for a reason.

I also don’t own a shotgun.

She wrote it to say “vote for me; I’m capable of making tough decisions.”

…appealing to those who can’t tell the difference between “forced to make the best of a bad situation, mindful of all the details and long-term effects,” and “short-sighted, ham-fisted reactions” E.g. machine gun nests on the Rio Grande are the elegant solution to the US’s immigration and illegal drug situations.

This is a slight deviation from the OP, but I volunteer for a local animal rescue group. The founder and many (most?) of the other volunteers, almost all female, are hardcore MAGA, judging from their FB posts and car bumper stickers. These are people who care passionately about animals, to the point of devoting considerable time, energy, and emotions to nursing them back to health and getting them adopted. I remember reading somewhere (maybe on the SD) that this seems to be standard politics in the rescue community.

I don’t engage politically with the other volunteers, but I suspect the rationale may be “animals good, foreigners bad.” Anyone else with insights into the MAGA animal-lover mindset?

It’s still a shotgun, though, in either case.

Birdshot would definitely be the wrong ammo to load one with for deer.

I’m not a hunter, either; though I have friends/hunters who hunt my land. But there was a bit of a commotion around here some years back when NYState decided to make it legal to hunt deer with rifles, and not only with shotguns, in this area. (Rifle bullets carry further, and are therefore more likely to hit the wrong being.)

IME animal-loving is orthagonal to politics. At least, it has been so far. I hope to hell they don’t manage to politicize it.

Interesting as in the UK the law says the opposite you must use a rifle not a shotgun (except for certain circumstances where it’s permissable for a property owner, and the property owner only, to use a shotgun to prevent serious property damage, though they have to prove the damage was caused by deer)

[cough]Eric[cough, cough]

It sure as hell should be politicized when it comes to laws about animal welfare. I mentioned before that animal welfare laws in Germany got reformed some years ago, legally turning animals from mere objects to a state where unreasonably killing them, let alone torturing them, became harshly punished crimes. I hope the same will happen everywhere.

That is interesting, as isn’t the UK in general more densely populated?

In the USA it depends on where you are – in NYState it depends on where you are in the state – and it’s been my understanding that it has to do with risk to other humans in the area because, again, rifle bullets carry further than shotgun shot.

It should not be politicized in the sense that whether one is for or against animal welfare laws becomes decided by whether one identifies as a Republican or as a Democrat. That’s exactly how to prevent such laws from happening.

The rifle vs shotgun laws have more to do with how far the bullet will go rather than what it does to the animal. There is no rifle hunting (other than black powder) allowed in New Jersey. Too many people.

OK, got you. Yes, this shouldn’t be another point of polarization.

No, his sons tortured and killed (?) a puppy(ies). IIRC they got the same kind of “Christian” punishment – this being Arkansas – that Josh Duggar got when he molested his sisters.

Well, that’s offensive.

We do have laws in Arkansas about torturing and killing animals, you know. And child sexual abuse. Incestuous or other.
Huckabee and his family are all dolts. How he got into the Governors office still flummoxes me. And as a family business, how his daughter got there, I just don’t understand it. She was an awful teenager. And skated through college. A disgusting human being. Yet, there she stands at her podium, sticking it to regular Arkansans.
.
This Kristi person should be arrested for killing the dog. I do believe it’s against the law. Discharging a weapon in an illegal area, at least.
If I was a prosecutor in that area I’d dig through law books til I found a law she broke. And convince a judge to swear out a warrant.
Despicable.

But both of these “criminals” got off with a slap on the wrist. It’s more politics than the state. I apologize.

Noem seems to have recognized the shit she stepped in – she’s now on Twitter trying to soft pedal the story as a sad but necessary choice. She is, predictably, getting roasted.

I assumed this was on her property and I would think most farmers/ranchers would say it is sometimes necessary to put down animals on their property and would be very upset at a law that would make that a criminal act.

AIUI, the dog shooting happened 15-ish years ago, so very likely past the statute of limitations. And even if not, the prosecution would have to find those workers who witnessed the deed, and that would be virtually impossible.
