Puppy-pitching Bosnia girl found

Possibly OFN, but here’s the link anyway:

I know this story was posted on the boards several weeks ago. Apparently the red-hooded wench has been uncovered.

Hurray!

The cited Telegraph story says that she (or presumably her guardian as she is underage) can receive up to €5,000 in fines for animal cruelty. So for six dogs, up to €30,000 in total.

blinks That’s…a LOT of money. My yearly salary when I lived in Bulgaria (which I think is slightly wealthier than Bosnia, although I think they’re pretty similar, economically) was about €2500.

I would be shocked if they enforced this.

Hell, I would be shocked if they did anything at all. Animals are not highly thought of in the Balkans. My host family’s dog was stabbed to death in the town square. I was shocked. They were like “meh, it’s sad, but it happens”.

What a waste of time and effort. Says a lot about the people who care about this of all things, when there are a million atrocities being committed every day.

A (reasonable) fine would be a good consequence. The bad thing here was the decision to make a video and put it online. I hope her life isn’t ruined forever because of this somewhat cold-hearted (to the strange people who regard unwanted puppies with the same warm fuzzy feelings they have for human infants), but morally inconsequential act. I can’t believe the extent which this kid has been demonized.

Oh good, here we go with the “How can you care about this, when that is going on somewhere else?” That’s new and refreshing. Newsflash: Some of us can care about both things. Go ahead, start a thread about babies being thrown into a pottery kiln, see what happens. I’ll totally get all riled up.

And shit.

Think that’s bad? A friend of mine from the Philippines went back to Manila to get married. When he got back he was telling me about the ceremony, which description culminated in him saying “and then we ate the family dog”.

I naturally expressed horror, to which he replied, in a mystified tone of voice: “but it’s a great honor for the dog!”

Morally inconsequential act?

I’d say this kind of casual cruelty is definitely morally consequential. What kind of person does such a thing? Too much trouble to take them to a pound for potential adoption or putting signs up for free dogs? Hell, if you must have them dead why a toss into a cold river to drown? There are more humane ways to do it if it must be done.

The girl deserves all the opprobrium the world can throw her way.

Yeah there are a million other atrocities and they all revolting. Just because you find one worse than another doesn’t make the “lesser” one ok and to be ignored.

Why in the world would they film that?

Why are you posting from a computer when people are homeless in your area? Sell all you have and give it all away!

Ha! This old argument?

One of the places I exercised my right to free speech was next to a wine & beer store, and every time we were there, people came out of the store with armloads of wine and cases or kegs of beer and stood there berating us for not spending all our time and money helping children.

“Oh, the beer is for the children, I take it?”

It’s just that the outcry about this makes about as much sense to me as people starting a manhunt for the farmer who gassed 60 rats to death in his barn.

Did he film it, seem happy to do it, and post it on the WWW for all to see?

Sure this shit happens all the time. Proudly filming and posting it doesn’t.

I suggest you search ‘killing rats’ on youtube.

Ah. Further confirmation why I don’t watch any animal related stuff on that there website.

I’m sure someone’s on it.

Sorry for the lack of warning in the OP. Figured most people knew about this by now. There’s a decent disclaimer about the content of the video on the page itself (as if you couldn’t gather the content from the descrption). Either way, video is not for dog-lovers (or anyone that would be disturbed by it, quite frankly).

You see no difference in those two scenarios at all? A farmer eliminating rats in his barn (which is effectively his workplace) versus gleefully chucking puppies into a river?

Here’s a clue (in case you’re not being completely disingenuous): Enjoying killing puppies = bad. Elimination of pests = necessary.

Yes, I’m sure the dog cares a lot about honor.

I was in the Philippines earlier this year. After seeing balut, I am pretty sure they’ll eat anything there.

Ah, but that’s not what you said. What you said is the classic “think of the children!” we have made fun of on this board so often. And then you made the somewhat strange insinuation that the known overpopulation of unwanted puppies is somehow different from the known overpopulation of unwanted children.

Huh? Unwanted puppies and unwanted children aren’t different in every way to you?
