Well, not sure I trust many slaughter houses to be very humane.
Anything is better than a miss shot in a gravel pit and being tortured while dumbass human digs around for another shell.
This woman is not a farmer and should not have animals or access to firearms.
My ex girlfriend, many years ago, made a typeface inspired by animal slaughter as part of her commercial design degree. This involved visiting a major local industrial slaughter house, and also a mosque near her college - for Eid.
I was the driver, so I took her to each venue, but not go in. I can see that, but I prefer not to.
I met the Imam at the mosque, and he was kind, gave me a place to sit and wait.
She returned with lots of photos that I never saw, but confirmed that both in the industrial setting, and in the open-air parking lot setting, the sheep (in this case, goats are bred for meat in poorer communities; we don’t get it in the shops, and even the Ethiopian restaurants often offer mutton instead), were humanely killed, dead within a few seconds by butchers who knew exactly what they were doing.
They also flirted with my girlfriend which shows a lot of confidence to do while killing sheep.
That’s true but it doesn’t make this any less a psychotic thing to say, and catastrophic politically. This is very likely the end of her chances of being Trump’s VP
There is really no need to over analyze this. No one is playing 5D chess here.
It’s not 5D chess. It’s a dumb game being played by dumb people. They play it because they know it works. They know it works not because they’re master strategists, but because 8 years of successful stimulus-response cycles have trained them to behave like this.
Your failure to understand it isn’t because they’ve outsmarted you. You’re looking at a performance by dumb mean people, for dumb mean people, and concluding “this will destroy her chances among people who aren’t dumb or mean.” You’re technically correct but that’s not the game being played.
I don’t see how anyone can look at the past 8 years of politics and conclude that someone doubling down on cruelty would be a deal-breaker, or that Trump will evaluate a VP on any basis other than what they can do for him. The puppy-killer story will be neutral or mild positive for Noem; something else will have to be a dealbreaker here.
That psycopath Trump actually said he could kill someone on Fifth Avenue and still win the election. Sadly, thanks to our antiquated electoral system, he did win. Thankfully, he didn’t have to put that theory of his to the test. The worst part of it is that his herd wasn’t bothered by him making that statement. Only a psycopath/sociopath would even utter that comment while running for office. It should’ve been the death knell of his campaign.
Shouldn’t that be “the latter often overpowering the former”? It seems like trump’s compulsive attention-seeking behavior often, um, ‘trumps’ his punishment avoidance instincts, as in his constant breaking of gag orders to talk to the press.
I’ve been to a slaughterhouse but it was only for cows. That was a pneumatic hammer to the head. The business end was about the size of a half-dollar coin and (I was told) had a nozzle in the middle that would shoot air in and scramble the brains when the hammer hit them in the top of the head. Dunno if the air nozzle part was true (cuz I think they can sell cow brains) but I saw it happen and it was like a switch was flipped. You could see the cows were dead in an instant.
Presumably this relied on the person doing it all correctly.
But goats? No idea. I hope it is as fast. I know some consider kosher meat to be cruel since it is not as fast as it could be.
I agree with you that the goal was to anger the libs because that entices the base. That’s part of how she is trying to appear “tough.”
But where I disagree is in your assumption that it’s only the libs who reacted that way. It sure seems to me like it also offended a lot of people who would ordinarily be a part of that base. This was getting play on right wing sites, and not in a positive way.
Of course there will be those who are diehards and won’t care or will make excuses. The question is whether the ones who don’t are neglible, or actually hurt her.
I still say that even Trump hasn’t actually gone this route. He doesn’t attack animals or justify harming them. (An, no, calling people “dogs” doesn’t count. No one would interpret that as attacking dogs.)
She’s trying to be Trump, but lacks his instincts.
Counterpoint nothing in the last 8 years has done anything to suggest that being a self confessed puppy killer is not a really really bad thing for a political candidate. Neither party is running on a pro puppy murder platform
Of course Trump will do that. And he has enough political savvy to know choosing a puppy killer for VP won’t do anything for him (the only slight caveat is there is a slim chance his ego will mean someone who would never ever be considered as POTUS for any party due to all the puppy murder is a good thing)
Trump could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and his base would not care but shooting a puppy is going too far.
Glad there are still some things everyone agrees is wrong but we’re getting to the bottom of the barrel when it is only puppies and kittens holding the line.
I agree with what others, including you, have said. Noem is not going to win over the farmer/rancher vote with this story.
Real farmers and ranchers understand that you have to work with difficult animals. It’s part of the job.
Noem has shown she can’t do that. When an animal gets difficult and needs more work than Noem is willing to do, she just kills it instead. She can afford to do that because she’s not really a farmer or rancher; these are just hobbies to her.
Yeah, I’m just not buying that this is some sort of secret dog whistle that only MAGA can hear. It’s a fuck up, Noem realizes it’s a fuck up and now she’s trying to downplay the episode.
And of course Trump will evaluate any VP on the basis of “what they can do for him.” And what he needs them to do is help him get elected. He didn’t choose Mike Pence in 2016 because he’d strangled a cat to prove his worth – he chose Pence because he needed to solidify his support among evangelicals and movement conservatives and Pence was well respected in those circles. Now that those groups are firmly in his camp, what he needs now is a VP who will help him appeal to conservative-leaning suburban voters. Puppy murder is unlikely to help with that demographic.
It was the fastest and kindest technique available when the kosher laws were written.
It can still be extremely close to it when done properly. When it’s mixed with modern slaughterhouse handling techniques, I gather that there can be problems.
So a quick question from a city boy about the three horses she claimed* she had to put down a few weeks ago.
I would have assumed that short of an outbreak of infectious disease (e.g. Hoof and Mouth) the culling for horses would be done on a one on one basis as the health of an individual animal at the point where it became apparent that they were suffering with no hope of a cure. That three were killed in short order seems more like a periodic assessment of the herd and culling any of those who were found not to be up to snuff. Is this normally how things are done?
It’s more humane to use a captive bolt to immediately stun the animal unconscious prior to bleeding. If that’s not an approved Kosher method of slaughter, it should be.
