Fuck Rosh Hashanah

The debate didn’t stop anything, and that was 2 hours not 2 days.

A debate between two guys who can’t be of any help drafting a bill on economic policy, since they aren’t on any of the relevant committees, since they don’t know a lot about economics? Yeah, they should definitely have cancelled that to go sit in DC playing with themselves while the experts figured out the least objectionable course of action. Dio doesn’t claim to be particularly even-handed, but that doesn’t make him wrong.

Of course, in the OP, he is being a complete dick, but whatcha gonna do.

To the OP:

Im sorry, I really have a hard time believing that you would be throwing a fit if they were taking a 24 hour recess for the celebration of Christmas or Easter? Those are the most important holidays for the Christian based faiths, and you can bet, even in the midst of economic crisis- Congress will be taking those days off, as always.

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the Jewish High Holidays. They are the two most important holidays on the Jewish Calendar.

Rosh Hashanah is just not the start of the new year, it is the start of the “days of awe” where your actions for the year are “recorded” by G-d in the Book of Judgment. Then there are the 10 days for “atonement” between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.

Yom Kippur is the “Day of Judgment” and it it the holiest and most somber of the holidays.

Yeah, well Israel was attacked by Egypt and Syria on Yom Kippur… they didn’t have much of a choice to defend themselves. Egypt and Syria attached them on Yom Kippur specifically because they thought that because it was the holiest of holidays for the Jewish people, they they would win without a fight.

Correct Me If I’m Wrong.

The point isn’t to quote the Bible, its to show that there is no prohibition in the Jewish religion to stop observant Jews from acting in a crisis. It’s not what Jesus Christ said, it’s the Pharisee’s lack of response that is important.

If it was Christians taking off for Good Friday I’d say fuck them too. I said in the OP, I’d feel this way if it was Christmas. Some things are more important than primative superstitions.

That’s exactly my point.

Actually I found it while I awaited a response. Interestingly, I also find the time to spell out my words so that my writing is intelligible.

Though I am a skeptic, I am not askeptic. Even so, it’s pretty obvious he meant “quoting Jesus” when he mistyped “quoting the bible.” And why should a Jew take ANY particular meaning from that passage, being that it is so clearly written to attack the Jewish establishment of the time?

Actually, it’s probably more legitimate than taking off Good Friday.

At this point in the crisis, I don’t see that one more day to come to a resolution is a problem. One more month, I can see - but one day? I do welcome arguments to the contrary.

If you think I wouldn’t go after Christians, you haven’t read many of my posts on religion. I’m taking it EASY in this thread. If it was Christians, I wouldn’t hold back at all.

It’s all childish superstion to me. I am not impressed by “most important” this or “holiest” that. I think all religion is codswallop, and that it’s ridiculous to let a crisis fester for the sake of ANY religious holiday.

Even if you believe in God, don’t you think God understands that there’s a crisis going?

As if having a bunch of these guys sitting around the Congressional chambers trying to come up with “answers” will truly change the economy if it is delayed two days.
Given the blow-off of the first “agreement,” it is probably better to sit back for a couple of days (while most of the staffs continue to work on real life details) rather than have Congress in full session twiddling their thumbs waiting for their staffs to come up with a new proposal.

Two days is not going to change the course of the U.S. economic situation and you are just being silly.

Or two days - as I just read.

I don’t know how observant they are, but there are 13 Jewish Senators and 28 House members who are. Pretty important ones on this issue, too: Rahm Emanuel, Diane Feinstein, Barney Frank, Joe Leiberman among them.

P.S. Only two Republicans among the 41 (Eric Cantor and Arlen Spector) and one Independant (Bernie Sanders).

If you’d like some further ammunition, Lamp-Carrier, you might be interested to know that my wife’s uncle opined in his sermon Sunday that born-again Christians need not fret about the currrent crisis, as it is obviously part of the run-up to Armegeddon and thus the return of Christ. Thus his congregation is encouraged to welcome whatever happens.

Reading this kind of thing is not good for my blood pressure. It’s why my wife doesn’t like me to watch Fox News. One of the scariest things about Palin is that she’s a Rapturist (she thinks that Alaska is going to be a refuge for the Left Behind). The scary thing about endtimers is that they WANT the world to end, so you can’t reason with them at all.

You may infer my level of agreement from the atypical dearth of snark in my response.

That said, DtC, do not go into a pother about the holiday. Though this is a genuine crisis, Congress needs to slow down, not to speed up. The impetus for speed comes largely from President Bush, who is, you may recall, a power-hungry lame-ducker intent of handling this issue much as he handled invading Iraq.

I don’t see how doing nothing while the Market is in free fall can conceivably be a good thing.

Thanks for ferreting this out for me, Lamar Mundane.

I’d need you to be specific about which market you refer to. Oh, never mind. Just keep your eyes on the CREDIT market more than the STOCK market, as the latter is inherently wonky.

No problem. I deal in exactly this sort of info professionally. Want to know how many left-handed Baptists with Military Service voted for the Smoot-Hawley Tariff act in 1930? I can get it.
