Maybe that was part of it, but the main reason is that there’s a market for right-wing hatred on the radio. Lots of people wanted (and still want!) to hear racist, misogynist assholes like Limbaugh and Hannity spout bullshit on their radios. There was no similar mass market for left-wing bloviation – if there was, then we’d see lots of successful national left-wing bloviator assholes. They’re not there, because liberals aren’t particularly interested in such a thing.

Supporting Sanders doesn’t make him a conservative, but if he for instance also supported several mainstream Democratic propositions or libertarian-liberal positions such as drug legalization, then I’d say he’s neither conservative nor liberal, which would be good enough for refuting the position being refuted.
But I’d agree that simply supporting Bernie would not be enough. I don’t care to learn enough about JR to research his views to see if this is true.
