You’re not ACTUALLY comparing the Star Wars EU to LOTR are you?
You make sure the LOTR movies follow the plot of the book because the book is the entire reason the movie exists. The new SW movie can discard the EU because the interest in a new SW movie is based on interest in the first 6 movies, not interest in the EU.
Do you really want a movie that follows EU canon? Episode VII is taking place 30 years after ROTJ According to the Timeline of Galactic History Chewbacca has died, as well as Han and Leia’s son Anakin, and the war with the Yuuzhan Vong had just ended. You start the movie with just that and millions of casual SW fans will just say “Huh?” People are going to expect the movie to start with Han happily married to Leia, living in a prosperous Republic with healthy children, and Chewie by his side. Anything else will piss off anybody who thinks the story ended with ROTJ.

There’s a difference between a retcon and a wholesale throwing-out. 
Yanno, philosophically I’m not sure there is. Every retcon essentially creates a completely new alternate universe, which is arguably comparable to completely discarding the old one.

im a big fan and have been reading the eu since i was 11. it may have even saved my sanity. i know new movies contradict fine what ever. call them legends cool if it floats ur boat. but to cancel the eu, FUCK YOU DISNEY!!! the eu has made more profit than the movies and that gay ass clone wars. games books and comics that were scheduled to continue great stories are now canceled to leave the universe i know and love unfinished forever incomplete. so they can pander to ass holes that will watch the films once or twice and say yeah that was all right but it was all special effects. FUCK DISNEY AND THE CYNICS THEY WILL TRY AND FAIL TO SATISFY!!
